I never thought I would own one so when the opportunity arose to purchase a Tesla Model 3, I found myself looking at it differently than any other car. User Experience
Teri for Tesla is an iOS and watchOS app that is integrated heavily with your Tesla’s ecosystem. When I picked up my Tesla, there was no native Apple Watch support for the Telsa. There was an iOS app, but no watch support. In early December 2024, Tesla rolled out version 4.39.5 of the iOS app, which included Apple Watch support. The features that became available included:
Watch Key: Pair your watch as a key to unlock and lock your vehicle without ever pressing a button, just like phone key. Frunk: Open your vehicle’s frunk. Charge Status: View your vehicle’s battery charge level. Charge Port: Open your vehicle’s charge port. Climate: Turn on climate control.The advantage that Teri has over the native Tesla support is that Teri provides additional features such as Siri voice commands, battery health monitoring, and a light show creator. While it’s always possible that Teri could face limitations due to API access in the future, it’s been a solid app for me and I’ve seen it receive updates since I’ve had it.
I cannot stress how helpful Teri has been for me. The app has given me access to my car when other options fail. I ended up having to exchange my Tesla due to a manufacturing issue. I was in the process of returning the car and locked myself out of the car. I had removed myself as the owner from the Tesla app and the cards were still in the car. So, I could not unlock the vehicle and some of my belongings were still in the car. Tesla would not unlock the car since I had already removed myself as owner. Fortunately, I hadn’t updated the Teri app yet so my watch still had the Watch Key active.
Thanks to Teri, I was able to unlock the car and retrieve the key cards and personal belongings that were still in the car. At the time this happened, Tesla had not released Apple Watch support and even if they had, the watch wouldn’t have worked because I had removed myself from the Tesla app. I’m guessing the API hadn’t synced Teri with the Tesla app yet and that’s why Teri’s Watch Key still worked. Whatever the reason, this was one of the many ways that Teri has proven to be reliable and incredibly helpful.
One of the reasons I continue to use Teri is because there are more options for customization over the native Tesla support. I like being able to use Siri for commands, too. I’m glad that Tesla offers watch support now, but there is still a lot of value in using Teri instead.
