The contract of Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy reportedly expires on Jan. 14, which gives Jerry Jones a nine-day window of exclusivity to negotiate a new deal with the Super Bowl-winning head coach. But if no deal is struck between the two sides, I hope you are ready to see the former Green Bay Packers head coach’s name connected to the Chicago Bears head-coaching vacancy.
ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler adds Mike McCarthy’s name to the list of those worth watching in connection with the Bears head coaching job:
Pete Carroll might not be the only Super Bowl-winning coach vying for the Bears job. I’ve talked to multiple people who believe McCarthy — should he leave Dallas — could set his sights on Chicago. He would give the Bears much-needed experience and offensive acumen.
Despite his rocky tenure in Dallas, McCarthy would stack up well if parachuting into this candidate pool and provide leadership. He turned 61 in November but seems to have the energy for the job. He’s quite familiar with NFC North football, too. This might not graduate from a working theory stage, but enough people have mentioned the scenario to make it worth mentioning here.
BEARS HEAD COACH CANDIDATE PROFILES: Coen | Johnson | Vrabel | Brady | Robinson
I can understand why Mike McCarthy would see the Bears as a fit for his next head-coaching stint if he leaves the Cowboys. The Bears have a young quarterback on a rookie contract who he can develop, a ton of cap space, and some quality draft capital. Plus, moving to Chicago could provide him an opportunity to square off against his former employer. C’mon, now. A Bears-Packers game pitting McCarthy against his replacement in Green Bay would do generational numbers in terms of television ratings, media attention, and casual NFL fan interest.

There is no denying that Mike McCarthy boasts a solid résumé. McCarthy led the Packers to a win in Super Bowl XLV and has an overall record of 185-122-2 (174-111-2 in regular-season games). The quality of his work experience goes beyond a career .602 winning percentage. McCarthy has done well in managing rosters despite the omnipresent egos of quarterbacks Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers while in Green Bay. And to have a winning record with the Dallas Cowboys while being under Jerry Jones suggests that McCarthy could work with any ownership group.
But does that make him a fit for the Chicago Bears for 2025 and beyond?
My gut reaction is a strong no. Dallas has made the playoffs in three consecutive seasons from 2021-23, but the team has more losses (3) than wins (1) in those postseason trips. I know Mike McCarthy isn’t the only reason the Cowboys have underperformed in the postseason. But heavy is the head that wears the crown. Simply put, The Dallas Cowboys should have done better under Mike McCarthy. Had they done so, then perhaps the team wouldn’t be allowing his contract to expire at the end of the regular season without an extension.
REPORT: The Bears Are “Interested” in Discussing Their Head Coach Vacancy With Pete Carroll
Ultimately, I am reminded of how Green Bay Packers fans reacted to McCarthy’s departure in 2018. That fan base was generally happy and carried a vibe that was thankful for his efforts during the good times but was ready to move on with a fresh start. Since parting ways with Mike McCarthy, the Packers have qualified for the playoffs five times, have four 11+ win seasons, and just one losing campaign. It was the right decision to part ways with McCarthy then, so I question why it would be a good move for the Bears to hire him now.
With that being said, I would not be wholly opposed to the Bears hosting an interview with Mike McCarthy. Pick his brain. Gather some football knowledge. The Chicago Bears aren’t in a good enough place to be dismissive of what any qualified candidate has to pitch to them this offseason — even if it comes from a former Packers coach.
BEARS-PACKERS WEEK 18: Mounting Injuries a Concern
In the end, it is worth noting that ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler thinks this idea might not make it out from the theoretical stage. But that enough people have brought it to his attention and mentioned it as a possibility is enough to put it on our radar.
