Caleb Williams Falls on the Sword For His Offensive Line

In what has otherwise been a turbulent season of Chicago Bears football that has featured more finger-pointing than I would care to remember, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has been a constant source of what accountability is supposed to look like.

So it comes as no surprise to me that QB1 spent some time during his Wednesday press conference at Halas Hall sticking up for the much-maligned offensive line that blocks for him every week:

Bears QB Caleb Williams: "The connotation behind my offensive line has been annoying and frustrating because they work their tail off to go out there. … I've taken sacks, yes. A good amount have been on me."

I don’t think anyone who has watched the Bears with any regularity would put the blame solely on any one party. But I am sure that Chicago’s offensive linemen appreciate Caleb Williams coming to their defense on Wednesday. Williams has been sacked 67 times as a rookie this season. For those of you who are not inclined to do math on a holiday, I’ll do it for you — that comes out to 4.2 sacks per game. Or, if you really want to break it down further, one sack per quarter. No matter how you slice it, the sack numbers are ugly.

Over at Windy City Gridiron, Lester Wiltfong Jr. tracks the sacks Caleb Williams takes every game. In his latest post on the subject, Wiltfong had four of the seven sacks in the Bears’ Week 17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks being on Williams. And after crunching the numbers, he has Chicago’s QB1 down for a team-leading 14.5 sacks being on him.

There are times when sacks just happen. The guys on the other side of the ball get paid, too. And some of them are well-compensated for their ability to wreck quarterbacks. Sometimes, you can point to an offensive lineman’s performance as to why a sack happened. Eleven different Bears offensive linemen have been fingered as the main culprits allowing a sack on a play this season. And sometimes, the quarterback is the one who is to blame for a sack. It happens.

2025 NFL MOCK DRAFT: Bears Get Their Choice of Top Offensive Line Prospects

With that being said, there is an expectation that the Bears will revamp their offensive line in front of Caleb Williams in 2025. The free agency period opens in March and has a handful of players who — if they make it onto the market — should be high-priority targets for General Manager Ryan Poles (or whoever is calling the shots this offseason). Even if the Bears plug some holes in free agency, the NFL Draft is the best place to truly build in the trenches. Good thing that this draft class appears to have some talent that could be had early in Round 2.

In the end, there are no more excuses for the Chicago Bears to not have a good offensive line in front of quarterback Caleb Williams. And I hope whoever gets the coaching job this offseason can make it clear to their bosses that upgrading the offensive line should be the front office priority when the player acquisition windows open in spring.
