DETROIT Lions kicker Jake Bates left fans baffled with an unusual warm-up routine during Monday Night Football.
The sequence occurred during the fourth quarter of the Lions‘ comeback win over the San Francisco 49ers in the Week 17 primetime game.
The Lions were up 34-28 with a little over 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter when Bates was seen stretching on the field.
However, Bates was seen making faces with his tongue throughout the routine.
ESPN reporter Lisa Salters explained that he was attempting to loosen up some of his muscles thanks to the help of a softball.
“He’s okay now, he hasn’t gotten any treatment from the medical staff,” she said during the Lions’ comeback at Levi’s Stadium.
“But he was on his left hip, he had a softball.”
ESPN broadcasters Troy Aikman were left giggling at the sequence.
“That explains the video we just showed, he’s weighing on something,” Aikman said.
The vvideo of the exercise went viral and left fans stunned with the sequence.
“This is some great TV right here,” one commented.
“That turf’s gonna get pregnant,” another wrote.
“Jake Bates is officially a meme now,” a third added.
The 25-year-old Bates would get the last laugh.
He kicked a 42-yard field goal minutes later – his second after completing a 57-yarder earlier in the game.
Bates also broke the Lions’ single-season record for points scored, passing Jason Hanson’s previous record (134).
He has one more game to add to his record.
The Lions were down 21-13 at halftime.
They proceeded to score on five consecutive drives in the second half to beat the 49ers.
Detroit will take on the Minnesota Vikings in Sunday’s regular-season finale.
The winner will secure the No. 1 seed in the NFC, giving the team a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
