China’s President Xi Jinping said that “reunification” with Taiwan was inevitable in his annual New Year’s speech yesterday, raising the prospect of conflict over the self-governing island.
“The people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family,” the Chinese leader said in the televised address. “No one can sever our family bonds, and no one can stop the historical trend of national reunification.”
Beijing has steadily escalated pressure on Taiwan in the past year, deploying warships and fighter jets around the island and staging military exercises in the Taiwan Strait that separates the territory from China.
China regards Taiwan as its own territory, but Taipei’s democratically elected government considers itself independent.
Tensions spiked over President Lai Ching-te’s visit to the US earlier this month, which China said it had lodged “serious protests with the US” over.
Washington has a policy of ambiguity towards Taiwan, maintaining diplomatic relations without formally recognising its independence. President Joe Biden said in 2022 that US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.

President Xi also emphasised plans for social reform and care for the children and the elderly in his New Year’s address.
“Enabling people to live happy lives is the top priority,” he said. “Every household hopes that children can receive good education, the elderly can have good care services, and young people can have more development opportunities.”

President Xi has invested heavily in high-tech domestic industries in a bid to accellerate the growth of the world’s second largest economy, including electric vehicles and artificial intelligence.
The Chinese leader also held talks with Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, yesterday. He said China and Russia were moving forward “hand in hand,” according to Chinese state media.
The two powers struck a “new era strategic partnership” earlier this year covering economic and security co-operation.
China has officially maintained neutrality in Russia’s war with Ukraine, although Beijing is believed to be supplying components such as microelectronics that have been critical to maintaining Moscow’s war effort.
