Sergio Conceicao Takes Over as AC Milans Head Coach

Sergio Conceição's appointment as the head coach of AC Milan marks a significant turning point for the club, which has experienced a tumultuous period under previous management. Following the dismissal of Paulo Fonseca after only six months in charge, attributed to inconsistent results and reported internal conflicts with key players, Milan seeks stability and direction. Conceição, who brings extensive experience from his successful tenure at FC Porto—where he secured three league titles among other accolades—has signed a contract extending until June 2026 . This strategic move highlights AC Milan's commitment to restoring its competitive edge in Serie A.

As the manager of the Dragões, he secured 11 trophies: 3 league titles, 4 Portuguese Cups, 3 Portuguese Super Cups, and 1 Portuguese League Cup.

During his tenure with Porto, he managed 379 matches, achieving 274 wins, 53 draws, and 52 losses, with a winning percentage of 72.30%.

At 12:00 CET PM, Conceição will be introduced to journalists and fans in the press room of the Milanello training center.

After the press conference and lunch, Milan will depart for Saudi Arabia, where the Italian Super Cup will take place from January 2 to 6, 2025.

The assistant coach will be Siranama Dembélé, two goalkeeping coaches will be Vedran Runje and Diamantino Figueiredo, the sports scientist will be Eduardo Oliveira, while Fabio Moura and Joao Costa will be additional assistants.

The hope will be that Conceicao and his staff can make a quick impact given that the squad leave for Saudi Arabia tomorrow. It is in the Middle East that they will contest the Supercoppa Italiana, with the semi-final against Juventus on Sunday, the team that his son Francisco Conceicao plays for.

Off the pitch, tensions are running high at AC Milan. Fans have directed their ire at the club’s owners, US investment fund RedBird, accusing them of lacking ambition. A celebration of Milan’s 125th anniversary on 21 December was overshadowed by the absence of club legend Paolo Maldini and chants demanding the owners sell the club. Supporters also protested outside a private party held for the milestone, displaying banners criticising the team’s direction.

The decision to appoint Conceição comes at a critical juncture for the club. With only two wins in their last seven league matches and currently sitting eighth in the standings, there is an urgent need for revitalization . The former Porto manager’s familiarity with Serie A—having played in Italy from 1998 to 2004—coupled with his proven track record of success makes him an ideal candidate to lead AC Milan into a new era. His first challenge will be against Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana semifinals, setting the stage for an immediate test of his capabilities.

In summary, Sergio Conceição’s arrival as head coach represents both hope and challenge for AC Milan. As he navigates the complexities of team dynamics and strives to enhance performance on the pitch, supporters will be keenly observing how his leadership influences not only player morale but also overall club success. The coming months will undoubtedly be pivotal as Conceição aims to restore AC Milan's status within Italian football.
