HARTFORD — Township trustees have named William Burns as the new trustee effective Wednesday to fill the term of Mike Wilson, who will become the new Trumbull County sheriff.
Trustee Chairwoman Rebecca Whitman said she and trustee Phil Wilhelm interviewed in public session the seven interested applicants. Applicants were Burns, Brock Elsea, John Grexa, Anthony Mancini, Justin Meikle, Zachary Snyder and Troy Thornton.
Whitman said Burns was selected for his many years of service and involvement in the community, which includes serving 14 years on the township zoning commission, and serving on the Joseph Badger Board of Education.
In November 2021, Burns ran in the three-candidate trustees race that was won by Whitman and Wilson. Whitman said Burns is involved with coaching local youth teams, is active with the Hartford Apple Festival and other community events.
In April 2023. Burns was named to the Joseph Badger Board of Education to fill a vacancy when former board member Linda Walton stepped down.
Burns’ term on the school board ends Tuesday.
Whitman said previously all of the applicants interviewed well and any of them could fill Wilson’s slot.
Whitman said she and Wilhelm were impressed that so many residents took interest in the position. Wilson was not involved in the interview process.
Trustees at Thursday’s year-end meeting also accepted the resignation of Wilson and recognized him for his three years of service.
Wilson’s term would have expired Dec. 31, 2025, so if Burns is interested in continuing after that, he will have to file for the November 2025 election to begin serving in 2026.
Burns will be sworn in as the new trustee at 6 p.m. Jan.7 at the organizational meeting.
Trustees also are moving forward with the King Graves Road Issue 1 project set for next year.
