Jay Leno’s Three-Word Response Shuts Down Rumors That Recent Injuries Are Connected to Gambling Debts

Jay Leno shut down rumors about the cause of his recent injuries during an appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast.

In an episode that was release on Dec. 22, Maher asked Leno directly about some of the rumors that have been swirling ever since Leno, 74, was spotted back in November with a broken wrist and bruising on his face. The former host of The Tonight Show told TMZ at the time that he suffered the injuries after falling down a hill.

Despite the initial explanation, some people have speculated that Leno might have actually suffered the injuries as a result of a mob beating inspired by gambling debts—allegations Leno flatly denied.

“I love the idea that the mob would drive to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, wait outside the Hampton Inn, in kind of a sleety kind of rainy day, to throw me down the hill,” Leno said when Maher, 68, asked about the rumors.

When Maher clarified that some people have alleged Leno’s “fall” was actually a “cover story,” Leno again denied the reports. The car enthusiast then observed of the rumor's gambling debt aspect, “I like the idea that they wouldn’t just take one of my cars for the gambling debt.”

While Leno said he has known comedians who have had run-ins with the mob, he credited his own ability to dodge any issues to an incident that occurred early in his career when he was at the Catch a Rising Star comedy club. “I was pretty smart,” Leno said of the “years ago” interaction. "I was onstage and this guy—a mob guy—comes up to me afterwards.” Though Leno said the “mob guy” tried to give him $100, Leno instead recommended donating the money. “And nobody ever bothered me again,” he concluded.

As their conversation about the rumors wrapped up, Maher revisited the root of the story for further clarification. “So, just for the record, you were not beaten up by the mob?” Maher asked.

“I was not,” Leno said, shutting down weeks of speculation with three small words.

Maher then posed a follow-up question. “Have you ever gambled?” he asked.

“No. I don’t gamble,” Leno said. “Losing $100 makes me feel stupider than winning $1,000 makes me feel good.”
