Jimmy Carter died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100, just over a year after the death of his beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter, whose November 2023 tribute service marked the last time the former president was seen in public before his death. He was visibly frail and nine months into a hospice stay at the time of the service on Nov. 28, making his appearance at Emory University's Glenn Memorial Church in Georgia especially poignant.
He entered wearing a blanket embroidered with his wife's face.

The following day, he attended a more private funeral service at Maranatha Baptist Church, in Plains, Ga., where he a wore a red lei—an apparent reference to the time they spent together in Hawaii when Carter was in the Navy.
The Carters married on July 7, 1946, when he was 22 and she was 19, and were together for 77 years at the time of Rosalynn's death. During their marriage, they welcomed three sons, John William (Jack), James Earl III (Chip), Donnel Jeffrey (Jeff), and a daughter, Amy Lynn.
