EMOTIONS became heated after a waitress posting on social media revealed the meaning behind a check left face down.
In a TikTok video @realslimsaydie asked “Anyone else get so scared when the check is face down.”
She implied the reason was to hide the tip amount left by customers.
“These people left the tip slip face down. You know what that means, let’s see if I’m right,” she said, before going on to share the amount of the tip.
“15 on 93 yeah, not the worst not the best,” she continued.
A fiery response on Facebook then kicked off, with 2,881 comments on her video.
“$15 for bringing me Dr Pepper refills is pretty good,” said one commenter.
“That’s 16% that’s pretty good, $15 is very reasonable,” replied another.
Some posters sympathized with her – one woman wrote: “I always tip a lot, 30% or more regardless because when I waited tables I promised God if I made it, I’d never forget where I came from and pass it on.”
And another said: “Oh these comments are so disappointing. As a server, I get you girl.”
However, others were less understanding. “It’s your bosses job to pay you. Not mine,” wrote one.
“16%… not the worse, not the best? If you did 3 tables an hour at that rate for an 8 hour shift, your daily would be around $400 after including hourly. At 5 days a week that’s 104k/yr,” commented another.
And another said: “So… Above the standard 15%??? Servers really need to find new jobs if they expect the customer to pay you when your boss won’t.
Saydie – who has 10,400 followers on TikTok – seemed surprised at the strength of the reaction to her video.
She took issue with some commenters, denying she had been complaining about the tip, but seemed to welcome the supporting words of others.
“Thanks girl you get me,” she replied to one respondent.
