May 2: Burn Permits now required in Mendocino County. As of 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, burn permits are now required for “hazard-reduction burning within the State Responsibility Area,” the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced this week.
May 3: Camera alerts UPD to stolen trailer. A man was arrested in Ukiah Thursday morning after the Ukiah Police Department was notified that a stolen trailer had entered the city limits.
May 4: AVA suspends print edition. The last print copy of the Anderson Valley Advertiser, a weekly newspaper covering Mendocino County since 1952, arrived in local stores this week.
May 8: Deputy visits Laytonville students. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office shared a lot of news regarding its corrections deputies recently, including that five new recruits graduated from a law enforcement academy in Sonoma County, that a deputy read to young students in Laytonville, and that this week is one set aside for honoring both corrections deputies and nurses.

Plans for a new Redwood Credit Union branch in downtown Ukiah have stalled as a company official reports that a new building approved for the corner of Main and Perkins streets will prove too costly to construct as currently conceived.
May 10: Cubbison criminal case delayed. For the second time, criminal proceedings have been delayed in a case with significant political implications for Mendocino County District Attorney David Eyster, who filed a felony misuse of public funds charge last fall against Mendocino County Auditor Chamise Cubbison.
May 11: Palace Hotel deadline nears. A city-imposed deadline for the current Palace Hotel owner to submit plans to stabilize or demolish the historic structure is only days away.
May 12: Ukiah boy arrested after threats posted online. Numerous concerned parents and multiple law enforcement officers responded to Grace Hudson Elementary School Friday after a threat was posted on social media, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.
May 14: Ukiah youth concert scheduled for May 19: The second Ukiah Youth Concert has built a solid foundation, bringing together a variety of performers and musical styles for a donation-based concert featuring an incredible lineup of young musicians and seasoned performers.
May 16: Driver arrested after pursuit. A Santa Rosa man was arrested late Monday after allegedly crashing a stolen car into a residence after being pursued by law enforcement, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
May 17: MCAA art in the gardens tour. The Mendocino County Art Asssociation (MCAA) is proud to announce its second annual “Art in the Gardens” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 18.
May 18: Purple Pipe project to close streets this month. Starting this week, work related to the city of Ukiah’s Recycled Water Project, also called the Purple Pipe, is expected to necessitate the closure of multiple streets, city officials announced.
May 19: Project to focus on pond area. The latest project designed to restore Riverside Park to a more natural state will focus on a large depression in the middle of the park that becomes a large pond during the winter and spring months, the Ukiah City Council was told this week.
May 23: Hopkins Fire suspect’s trial begins. The trial of a man charged with setting a fire that destroyed nearly 50 structures in Mendocino County three years ago began Wednesday in Marin County, court documents and an investigator confirmed this week.
May 24: Queen to be crowned tonight. The 2024 Potter Valley Spring Festival and Rodeo will be held this weekend, and the first night of festivities begins with the crowning of this year’s Rodeo Queen and the Junior Rodeo Slack.
May 25: Palace Hotel demolition OK’d. The city of Ukiah announced Thursday it has granted a conditional permit for demolition of the historic Palace Hotel after getting a permit application over a week ago.
May 26: PG&E customers face more rate hikes. PG&E customers face the ominous prospect of a fresh round of increases in monthly bills in a case tied to the utility titan’s efforts to connect new homes and businesses to the electricity grid.
May 29: Group rides for men’s health. On Sunday, May 19, Ukiah Valley residents were treated to the spectacle of nearly 50 motorcycle riders dressed in dapper attire touring Ukiah and surrounding areas, as part of the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, a worldwide fundraising event aimed at supporting men’s physical and mental health.

June 5: Man doused with boiling water. A 33-year-old Willits man sustained serious burns Sunday night, from boiling water allegedly thrown on him by a relative while the two were arguing over groceries at a Willits residence.
June 6: Hopkins Fire trial ends in mistrial. The first trial of a man charged with setting a fire that destroyed about 30 homes in Mendocino County recently ended in a mistrial, according to court documents.
June 8: Federal officials give update. In the form of a grant described as coming from a “brand-new” source of infrastructure funding, the group hoping to continue diversions from the Eel River to the Russian River in Mendocino County has received $2 million from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, federal officials announced during a visit to Ukiah Friday.
June 9: Ukiah High Graduation moves to Friday night. For the first time in decades, the Ukiah High commencement ceremonies were held Friday evening instead of Saturday morning, a change that school officials said the graduating seniors had wanted to make happen last year.
June 13: Texts of weapon lead to arrest. A 29-year-old Ukiah man was arrested this week after allegedly threatening a woman by sending her photos of a firearm, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
June 14: Kidnap report a hoax. A boy found wandering in Redwood Valley this week admitted lying to investigators about being kidnapped, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.
June 15: Dewey returns to Mendocino County. After a brief stint as a farmer in Missouri, former Ukiah Police Chief Chris Dewey returned to Mendocino County this year, where he is now serving as the Interim Chief for the Willits Police Department.
June 18: Fire starts near closed Carl’s Jr. A man believed responsible for starting a fire behind an abandoned fast food restaurant on North State Street in Ukiah Saturday was arrested, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

June 20: Remodel of gas station proposed. A proposed remodel of a deteriorating gas station site on South State Street will be considered by the city of Ukiah administration this week.
June 21: Council given update on Palace. Prompted by questions from an audience member, city staff gave the Ukiah City Council an update on the status of the Palace Hotel Wednesday, though few new details were shared.
June 22: Report: Lack of staffing a problem. A lack of staffing at Family and Children Services is creating a “toxic environment” for personnel and causing more stress for clients, the Mendocino County Civil Grand Jury reports recently after investigating complaints.
June 23: Mendocino Theatre presents ‘A Thousand Clowns’. Mendocino Theatre Company proudly presents the timeless comedic masterpiece A Thousand Clowns by Herb Gardner, directed by a local favorite, the multi-talented Bob Cohen.
June 26: Ukiahan suspected of taxi carjacking. A Ukiah man was arrested Monday on suspicion of carjacking after allegedly holding a knife to a taxi driver’s throat and stealing his vehicle, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
June 27: PG&E to reduce rates for July. Pacific Gas and Electric will be lowering its electric rates temporarily next month, officials announced in a webinar Wednesday.
June 28: Guidiville gets $200,000 from state. Guidiville Rancheria was awarded a fraction of the millions of dollars in public funds it sought to demolish the Palace Hotel.
June 29: Legislature approves state audit. A sweeping state audit of Mendocino County practices, including finance, contracts and procurements, and elections, will be conducted over the next 18 months after legislative approval of a bill that now only needs the governor’s signature.
June 30: Hydrant floods corner after accident. A broken hydrant flooded the intersection of Perkins Street and Orchard Avenue Friday afternoon when two vehicles collided near McDonald’s, the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority reported.

July 3: MCSO: Montana man dies on coast. A missing Montana man was found dead in the Pacific Ocean near Little River on the Mendocino Coast, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.
July 4: ‘We the People’ July show to be celebrated during First Friday Art Walk.
July 5: Young Artist Wall. Tiby Owen and Marin Lake, a couple of Ukiah High School’s most recent graduates, are planning to pair up to show their artwork on the Corner Gallery’s Young Artist wall for the months of July and August.
July 7: Residency program graduates celebrated. Five graduates from Adventist Health Ukiah Valley’s Family Residency program were celebrated on Sunday, June 23, by faculty, staff and nearly 200 attendees during a ceremony at Saracina Vineyards in Hopland.
