DRIVERS have roasted Toyota’s vehicle names, claiming they are impossible to pronounce.
While consumers ran to social media to call out Toyota’s naming convention, a top executive said the vehicle might be renamed altogether.
“Toyota truly has the worst vehicle naming in the industry,” said one X user.
“After naming its first mass-market BEV SUV the ‘bZ4X,’ a name absolutely nobody can spell correctly, Toyota just launched the ‘Alphard’ and ‘Vellfire.’ People will quickly call them ‘All-farts’ and ‘Hellfire.'”
SOCIAL MEDIA FRENZY
Others are more concerned with the look of the vehicle — not the name.
“You forgot to mention how ugly they look,” tweeted one social media user.
“Also the worst-looking cars this year,” echoed another.
“That’s the dumbest ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot,” a third said.
However, some X users pointed out that the new style is pretty common in parts of Asia.
“These are super popular in Japan. On the highways it often seems like these and their variants are the most common vehicles on the road,” one X user tweeted.
“This Alphard with Lexus badge does well with high-income earners in Asia. Most people have this vehicle also have a chauffeur,” another said.
Although this naming convention is unique among the brand; the only other bZ model to reach production is the China-only bZ3.
According to Canada’s Motor Illustrated, a Quebec regional executive says that the bZ4X name might be on its last leg.
Some speculate that the name change may only be for Canada.
The name has been the center of controversy – with many drivers asking what it means.
The bZ stands for “Beyond Zero.” This is intended to be an entire sub-brand of EVs. The 4 refers to its size, and the X refers to its crossover body style. The name is an abbreviation for “Beyond Zero 4 Crossover.”

X user @alojohToyota’s vehicle names often refer to crowns, architecture, royalty, mythology, and natural patterns.
For example, the Corolla is named after the outer crowning portion of a flower; the Toyota Camry’s name is a play on kan-muri, the Japanese word for “Crown.”
The regional executive who shared the news of a possible name change did not specify the new name.
They didn’t provide any timeline of when the change might take place either.
Meanwhile, with the new year just around the corner, Subaru is preparing an exciting new upgrade to one of its best-loved models.
And drivers looking to upgrade their cars are being urged to buy a popular Toyota model before the huge price hike in 2025.
