Dallas Cowboys in Dak Prescott bench decision with $240 million quarterback facing ‘final’ season – 5 replacements

PRESSURE is on the Dallas Cowboys to win in the 2025 season, and Dak Prescott could be a roster casualty if he doesn’t do his job.

The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback will be entering his 10th season with the Cowboys and is coming off a disappointing 2024 7-10 campaign.

Prescott had the most efficient season in 2023 and led the NFL outright in passing touchdowns (36).

He would receive a then-record-breaking four-year, $240 million contract in the next offseason, but would struggle, posting 11 passing touchdowns against eight interceptions before suffering a season-ending injury.

The Cowboys have expectations to win this season, according to new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who said this week, “We’re gonna win. And when we win, our coaching staff is going to get raided.”

While Prescott has been the team’s undoubted No. 1 quarterback, the veteran hasn’t been trustworthy in terms of the health department in recent memory, as he’s missed 26 games over the past four seasons.

Combine durability concerns and his recent below-average play and the $50 million a year Prescott could be on the hot seat if he disappoints and is benched in 2025.

Here are five quarterback replacement options for Jerry Jones‘ Cowboys in 2026 if the franchise, that hasn’t won a Super Bowl since 1995, moves on from Prescott, whose contract ends in three years.

    Joe Milton

The New England Patiots traded the second-year player Joe Milton to the Cowboys during the offseason, and Dallas is getting a guy who’s motivated, to say the least.

After Milton was traded to the Cowboys, it was reported that the second-year player “fancied himself a starter” which caused the Patriots to ship him elsewhere.

And Milton was reportedly “happy” to be traded to the Cowboys, as his mother is a longtime fan of America’s Team, and playing for the franchise is a “dream” for the 25-year-old, Masslive.com reported at the time of the trade.

Milton played just one game in his rookie season in 2024, but he did impress in that one contest, completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 touchdowns and one touchdown in Week 18.

    LaNorris Sellers

If the Cowboys want to draft a young quarterback, they could look to no other than South Carolina‘s LaNorris Sellers.

The 2026 QB class is expected to be much better than last year’s as Allar has been predicted to be the fourth quarterback off the board (behind Texas‘s Arch Manning, if he declares, Clemson’s Cade Klubnik, and LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier).

The Cowboys will likely hold a 2026 first-round draft selection just outside of the first 10 picks, but also not too far back, which would be in range to take the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Sellers.

The 19-year-old has plenty of potential as he’s athletic and has a rocket of an arm.

Sellers plays both within and out of structure and could be an interesting project player for the Cowboys.

    Drew Allar

Penn State Nittany Lions quarterback Drew Allar could also be an option for the Cowboys.

Allar nearly declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, but opted to play one more year of college.

He’s a strong bet to be taken in the first round thanks to his arm talent and size.

Allar’s decision-making needs to be sured up, but another year of tape can convince teams, like the Cowboys, to take a chance on the senior.

    Daniel Jones

The Philadelphia Eagles scooped up former New York Giants star Saquon Barkley in free agency, so why can’t the Cowboys take another player who used to rep Big Blue in Daniel Jones?

Yes, Jones has since moved on to two different franchises, including his current one, the Indianapolis Colts, whom he signed a one-year, $14 million contract with this offseason, and yes, the quarterback isn’t nearly the same caliber player as Barkley.

But Jones could be in line for a decent-sized contract next season if he’s given the starting role and puts together a career-best campaign with the Colts.

Just ask Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield – both quarterback who signed substancial contracts after proving their starting quality play on team-friendly deals.

It would be smart for the Cowboys to inquire about Jones’ services, should he succeed in 2025.

Jones struggled last season, but he’ll have an offensive line that has much more suport than what the Giants provided him.

    Justin Fields

The New York Jets signed Justin Fields to a two-year deal this offseason after he played with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year.

However, the team can move on from him quite easily if he either disappoints or another quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft is more intriguing for the Jets.

Justin Fields penned a two-year contract with the New York Jets after starting six games for the Steelers last seasonAP

Fields’ running abilities is arguably his best trait, and the league has embraced that aspect for quarterbacks in the year 2025.

He started six games in 2024 for the Steelers and went 4-2 in that span.Fields passed for 1,106 yards in the six contests with five touchdowns and one interception.
