Kings Shockingly (And Ruthlessly) Fire Head Coach Mike Brown

The Sacramento Kings have fired head coach Mike Brown, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The news comes after a 13-18 start to the season and five consecutive losses. This included a one-point defeat against the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night after De’Aaron Fox fouled Jaden Ivey behind the arc with 0.03 second remaining. Ivey nailed the free throw to secure the victory.

Sacramento’s next game is Friday night against the Lakers.

    Kings Fire Head Coach

Sacramento doubled down on their offensive identity this offseason with the sign-and-trade acquisition of DeMar DeRozan. Built around De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and the veteran forward, they got off to a solid 5-3 start in a competitive Western Conference.

As the season has progressed, however, the Kings’ core has increasingly struggled to mesh. They are only 5-12 over their last 17 games and have experienced shocking struggles in crunch time. The team is tied for appearing in the second-most clutch games this season (19) and holds only a 6-13 record. Considering De’Aaron Fox and DeMar DeRozan have been two of the best closers in the league over the last few years, their inability to finish has been perplexing.

At the same time, many will likely view firing Mike Brown as a rash decision. The head coach has been an essential part of turning the franchise around over the last couple of seasons. He even won the Coach of the Year award following the 2022-23 season, when the Kings snapped their 16-year-long playoff drought.

Sacramento did go on to miss the postseason again during the 2023-24 campaign, but they at least finished a solid 46-36 and lost in the second round of the Play-In Tournament. Overall, Brown held an impressive 195-107 record as the head coach of the Kings.

All eyes will now be on how the team responds. Will this bring the roster together or speed up the Kings’ spiral? And, if the problems aren’t fixed, could we see Sacramento suddenly become a trade deadline darling? They undoubtedly have some highly-intriguing names on their roster.

If one thing is for sure, the Kings didn’t do themselves any favors with the way they approached this firing. Matt George of ABC 10 reported that Brown ran a full practice and held one-on-one conversations with players and coaches less than an hour before he was fired. In other words, this appeared to be a pretty sudden and ruthless firing, especially when we consider Brown signed an extension through 2027 just this past June!
