While the rest of the community was waiting for the ball to drop and welcome the new year, first-time mother Shelby McGlothlin was waiting for her water to break. A few hours after the New Year, Mendocino County’s first baby for 2024 made her entrance and Baby Mila was born on Jan. 1, 2024, at 3:56 a.m. Proud first-time parents Shelby McGlothlin and Dylan Fraser Gilbert, welcomed Baby Mila who was almost 7 pounds and 19 inches tall with a full head of hair.
Jan. 5: Young Artist Solana Rubino. The Corner Gallery will start out the new year with a new featured young artist.
Jan. 6: Rotary Club Project provides rain gear. On Dec. 17, a Rotary Club project was finalized here in Mendocino County helping our local Mendocino County Search and Rescue team with some much needed rain gear.
Jan. 7: Dungeness crab fishery held up by entanglements. Interest in the delicate meat of California’s Dungeness crabs is high, but fish markets have been kept waiting for local supplies of the delectable crustacean.
Jan. 10: Body found is likely missing woman. A body found near the shore in the northwest section of Mendocino County has been recovered from the ocean but not yet officially identified, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported Tuesday.
Jan. 11: GSA board to discuss fees, budget. At this afternoon’s meetings of the Ukiah Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency’s board of directors, a draft five year implementation budget and fee schedule will be discussed.
Jan. 12: Crews Making Steady Progress. When schools were out for the holidays, crews installing pipe for the final phase of the city’s Recycled Water Project tried their best to finish with the roads closest to Ukiah High School before the students returned to their classrooms. However, the weather had other plans.
Jan. 13: College printmaking classes return. After a three-year hiatus, printmaking is again being offered at the Mendocino College Ukiah Campus.
Jan. 14: Defense bid to recuse DA denied. Mendocino County Superior Court Judge Keith Faulder denied a defense bid Friday to recuse District Attorney David Eyster from the criminal prosecution of suspended Auditor Chamise Cubbison, saying evidence of the DA’s bias is too thin at this point.
Jan. 17: HBO house for sale in Redwood Valley. The sprawling Redwood Valley estate formerly known as Skull Mountain Ranch, which starred as the home of a sinister character in the HBO series “Sharp Objects,” will soon be on the market again, DeCaro Auctions International reported.
Jan. 18: Permit sought for former bank building. Shortly after succeeding in their long and winding journey seeking approval to build a new Ukiah branch at the corner of Perkins and Main streets downtown, Redwood Credit Union officials applied for a permit to do what they had hoped to do from the very beginning – simply move into the vacated Savings Bank of Mendocino County branch on East Perkins Street.
Jan. 19: Teens chased by sex offender. Several frustrated Ukiah residents and business owners urged the Ukiah City Council Wednesday to address what they described as “out of control” conditions downtown after a man reportedly chased three teen-aged girls there Monday afternoon.
Jan. 20: Willits resident turning 116. It’s perhaps the biggest birthday party in the country and everyone is invited. Willits resident Edith “Edie” Ceccarelli, who as of Friday was the oldest living person in the United States, will turn 116.
Jan. 21: Two injured in pursuit. Two Ukiah women were taken to the hospital Thursday evening after an SUV being driven by a suspect fleeing a traffic stop collided with their vehicle during a high speed pursuit, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
Jan. 24: MCSO promotes new captain. After serving as public information officer for the patrol/investigations division of the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office for more than a decade, Capt. Greg Van Patten was re-assigned this month to serve as PIO for its corrections division.
Jan. 26: Camera aids in vehicle recovery. A Ukiah man was arrested recently for alleged theft of a vehicle and resisting after leading multiple law enforcement officers on a high-speed pursuit, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
Jan. 28: Final days at Palace Hotel? The days are numbered for the historic Palace Hotel, especially if a pending $6.6 million taxpayer funded financing scheme of a local tribe and its planned partners wins state approval.
Jan. 30: Paths to sustainability and self-reliance. The Ukiah Branch Library is sponsoring Urban Homesteading 101: Paths to Sustainability and Self-Reliance, an opportunity for local homesteaders to come together and share their knowledge and participate in six bimonthly hands-on workshops.
Jan. 31: 53 syphilis cases reported in 2023. A record number of syphilis cases were reported last year in Mendocino County, health officials announced this week.

Feb. 1: Stolen car alert leads to arrest of four in hotel room. Four people were arrested recently after a stolen car alert led officers to their hotel room, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

Feb. 7: Storm Damage. Crews responded to more than 30 fallen trees Sunday.
Feb. 8: Skunk Train receives fed loan. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced on Jan. 29, 2024, that Mendocino Railway, along with Sierra Northern Railway in the Central Valley, has been approved for a loan from its Build American Bureau “to expand and rehabilitate rail infrastructure in Mendocino County, California.”
Feb. 9: City construction work resumes. While the weather stopped work on major construction projects in the city of Ukiah for most of February so far, Public Works Director Tim Eriksen told the Ukiah City Council Wednesday that crews were expected to be back on the streets Thursday.
Feb. 10: Mendocino County ballots incorrect. Despite a voting population with significantly more registered Democrats, all Mendocino County residents were sent Republican ballots for next month’s primary election, the Elections Office reported Thursday.
Feb. 11: Gigi celebrates centennial. Barbara King is looking forward to her big day. Born on Feb. 12, 1924, King (whose maiden name is Shields) was born and raised in Mendocino County – the youngest of 13 children.
Feb. 14: Price for wine grapes up 11 percent. While only slightly more grapes were crushed this year than last, the average price for those grapes went up more than 11 percent, according to the annual report prepared by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Feb. 16: Students hosting candidate Town Hall. There has been so much interest in the candidate forum Potter Valley High School is hosting next week that the event might need to be moved to a much larger room.
Feb. 17: ‘Strong pricing, good yield.’ The value of last year’s grape harvest in Mendocino County reached “near-record crop values,” according to an analysis of state data by Mendocino Winegrowers.
Feb. 18: State: Palace demolition not needed. Senior staff at a state agency designated to oversee possible contamination studies at the Palace Hotel site are ruling out any need for demolition to do investigative work at the downtown Ukiah site.
Feb. 20: Lunar New Year lauded at Library. It’s the year of the dragon, an auspicious year, in that the Chinese Dragon embodies the head of a camel, horns of a deer, eyes of a demon, ears of a bull, neck of a snake, belly of a clam, scales of a carp, claws of an eagle and paws of a tiger, portending harmony, self-transformation and lots of luck.
Feb. 22: Officer celebrates boy’s birthday. A Ukiah Police officer responded to Oak Manor Elementary school last week to meet with one of its students – not to learn more about anything bad the boy might have done, but instead to help celebrate his birthday.
Feb. 23: More ballot errors discovered. Likely more than 150 Mendocino County voters received another incorrect ballot in the mail this month, Registrar of Voters Katrina Bartolomie reported Wednesday.
Feb. 24: Slide blocks Highway 128. Highway 128 near the Mendocino Coast was “completely closed in both directions” Friday due to a landslide, the California Department of Transportation and the California Highway Patrol reported.
Feb. 25: MUSD School board will turn MCN Listservs over. At the Mendocino Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting held on Thursday, Feb. 15, board members voted unanimously to accept a proposal from the Mendocino Listserv Project to manage the MCN listservs.
