The Bears Are “Interested” in Discussing Their Head Coach Vacancy With Pete Carroll

ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a Christmas Day treat when he reported that Super Bowl-winning coach Pete Carroll was interested in coaching the Chicago Bears in 2025.

As it turns out, the feelings might be mutual.

During the Amazon Prime pre-game show before the Thursday Night Football matchup between the Bears and Seattle Seahawks, NFL insider Albert Breer said that the Bears were interested in discussing the opening with Carroll. Here is a snippet from the segment:

"I'm told that the Bears are interested in sitting down and having a conversation with (Pete) Carroll about their opening."@AlbertBreer reports on the Bears' search for a new head coach. pic.twitter.com/Do6ZruZr4d

“Yes, Pete Carroll has an interest in the Bears job but that’s not the only one he is looking at. I’m told that he has informed all the teams with openings that he is looking to get back into coaching in 2025. Additionally, I’m told that the Bears are interested in sitting down and having a conversation with Carroll about their opening.”

    Hmmm…

Mutual interest between the Bears and Pete Carroll interests me. I realize that hiring Carroll isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. However, the Bears are not strong enough of an organization to thumb their nose at candidates with his résumé. This isn’t a John Fox redux. Pete Carroll has built winning programs in college at USC and in the pros with the Seattle Seahawks. That guy is a winner through and through. The least the Bears can do is talk to the guy and see if they can learn something about how to operate a functional football organization.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not banging the drum for Pete Carroll to be the next Bears head coach. However, I am willing to keep an open mind about who should get the gig. I hope this franchise is willing to do the same.

More on candidates who aren’t Pete Carroll

This is what Breer had to say when asked about the latest regarding the Bears coaching search:

“The Bears have been vetting candidates and leadership is going to remain a key component in what they are looking for in their next coach. But it has become abundantly clear over the last few weeks that if it’s not a quarterbacks guy specifically that they will be looking for someone with a clear plan for the quarterback.” “And that brings us to Ben Johnson. I know his name has been bandied about a bunch. He’s gonna be selective in who he interviews with as we said earlier in the month. I would expect that he would take an interview with Chicago, but his criteria remains the same. He wants alignment with the general manager and an ownership group that will identify and fix its mistakes.” Some other names to keep an eye on: Both Mike Vrabel and Aaron Glenn very clearly fit the leader of men mold. A couple of other guys who have connections to the organization. Kliff Kingsbury, of course, coached Caleb Williams at USC. Has a good relationship with him. Brian Flores was a college teammate of GM Ryan Poles. And then there is interim coach Thomas Brown. I expect all of those guys to get a look.”

We are so early in the process that I do not want to put the cart in front of the horse when it comes to any of the Bears head-coaching candidates. However, I am intrigued by the early collection of candidates connected to the opening. Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson is the people’s champ and presumptive leader in the clubhouse. But coaches like Pete Carroll, Mike Vrabel, Aaron Glenn, and others come with levels of intrigue because of their résumés.

This head coach search could last all the way into February. So I hope you are in your comfy clothes as you take in all the info.
