We’re adding Super Bowl-winning coach Pete Carroll to the list.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter shares the news:
Former Seahawks Super-Bowl winning HC Pete Carroll has expressed interest in the Bears HC job and would like to return to the sideline next season, league sources tell ESPN. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) December 25, 2024Countless Chicago Bears fans have scribbled “new coach” on their Christmas wish lists this winter. But I did not expect to be writing this post … with this candidate … on this Christmas morning. And while we won’t know who will emerge from the packaging until January (at the earliest), candidates are popping up here, there, and everywhere. So maybe I shouldn’t be surprised that Pete Carroll would be expressing interest in the gig.
Perhaps this is the magic of Christmas showing up unexpectedly — just like in the movies!
Pete Carroll and the Bears?
More from Schefty:
In recent weeks, Carroll has begun discussing a return in the NFL and now is interested in doing it. He has not yet spoken with any teams yet, per sources, but he would welcome that chance.
Though Carroll is 73, everybody who knows him knows that he has more energy than most.
…
Chicago, with former USC quarterback Caleb Williams is appealing to Carroll, per sources.
As someone who likes to keep an open mind, I am not opposed to hearing out Pete Carroll’s pitch — even if he isn’t a top candidate in my book. The 73-year-old coach is one of the best in football history. His Seattle Seahawks team won Super Bowl XLVIII and amassed a 137-89-1 record coaching the squad. Seattle missed the playoffs just four teams under Carroll’s watch and had just three seasons in which the team finished with a losing season in the 14 years he was with the Seahawks. It is a résumé that is as good as it gets.
CHICAGO BEARS HEAD COACHING CANDIDATES: A Preliminary Ranking of the Best Fits
The Bears have had just one winning season in the last decade and more years that ended with 10+ losses than ones that finished with a playoff appearance. So maybe it wouldn’t hurt to talk to Pete Carroll about the job opening that became vacant after the team fired Matt Eberflus on the day after Christmas. Because even if I don’t think Carroll is the best fit for the Bears, maybe there is some knowledge that can be gleaned from a meeting. The way I see it, Chicago’s football organization — from top to bottom — isn’t good enough not to hear out the pitch of a coach with that track record of success.
In the end, the big takeaway for me from this bit of news is that now we have two Super Bowl-winning coaches who have reportedly shown some semblance of interest in coaching the Bears. And with Pete Carroll seemingly seeing the appeal in coaching quarterback Caleb Williams, I feel better about the Bears’ chances of landing a great coaching candidate in this hiring cycle.
We’ll have more about Pete Carroll and his potential candidacy later. For now, enjoy your Christmas.
