Russell Wilson makes retirement decision as Pittsburgh Steelers plan ‘substantial’ changes over season collapse fears

PITTSBURGH Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson recently made a retirement decision as the playoffs approach.

However, the 36-year-old’s plans come at a time in which the Steelers have lost by two straight games, and reports of the team potentially thinking of “substantial” changes if the team collapses any further.

Wilson and the Steelers will prepare for their Christmas Day game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.

This week, the nine-time Pro Bowler spoke to reporters and seemed to share his desire to play in the NFL longer, saying, “Hopefully [I] get to win a Super Bowl.”

Wilson has been playing on a one-year, $1.2 million deal and has improved mightily in Pittsburgh following a disappointing stint with the Denver Broncos.

His latest comments come after an interview with ESPN’s Hannah Storm last month, expressing his intention to continue playing in the league.

“I definitely want to play another five to seven years. … I think that’s always been my mindset, is the longevity of the game,” Wilson said.

“I feel great, I feel young, I feel like I can still move around out there and make all the decisions and all the throws.”

Wilson and the Steelers are coming off a 34-17 road loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16 which came after a 27-13 road defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Pittsburgh will now have to play the reigning Super Bowl champion 14-1 Chiefs on a short week.

The Steelers are still atop the AFC North, but a loss and a Ravens victory would make things interesting with just one week left in the regular season.

Pittsburgh has lost three times in the first round of the NFL playoffs since 2020.

Post-Gazette Sports insider Brian Batko believes the team could make changes in the organization if they fail to advance to the Divisional Round this season.

“Change is inevitable in this business, but given the state goal of the postseason success dating to last January sitting down with Art Rooney II, something substantial wouldn’t surprise me,” Batko wrote in his weekly Q&A mailbag.

Batko referenced Rooney previously stating that he and the team have felt impatient about the lack of recent playoff success.

The Steelers haven’t won a postseason game since the 2016 campaign.

Pittsburgh started this season with an 8-2 record but has now lost three of their last five games.

Wilson’s performance against playoff contenders like the Chiefs and Ravens could decide his fate in Pittsburgh.

He is coming off a 217 passing-yard performance along with two touchdowns against an interception.

Wilson has 15 passing touchdowns against four interceptions this season.
