At least yesterday’s Bears game got a little better as it went on? I’ve been at the point this season where I’m only really looking for progression from Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze. Everything else is kind of just whatever at this point, and at least we saw that a bit yesterday.

The slow starts are getting ridiculous. Like, obviously this team has problems to address but there is WAY too much talent for them to be scoreless through the first quarter and have an offense that does next to nothing throughout the first half this often. Ultimately it starts with coaching. The team never seems prepared to play football out of the gate, and trying to come from behind in the NFL constantly is a recipe for disaster. As the game went on, the offense got sharper. Rome Odunze stopped dropping the football and played a nice game. Keenan Allen woke up in the second half and ended up with a nice game. The offensive line started protecting better. Caleb Williams’ accuracy got better. Usually, teams’ first 12 plays are fairly scripted and almost always the sharpest. For whatever reason with the Bears it’s been the exact opposite. Part of it seems like the team is having a hard time getting up for games, but this has been an issue all year not just the last few weeks. © Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images Games like this still leave me optimistic that the Bears have some pretty good pieces in place going forward and a roster and a quarterback that a coach might want to take over. It wasn’t Caleb Williams’ best game, and some of his numbers were during semi-garbage time, but he did some very good things after starting slow. He still hasn’t thrown an interception since the Jaguars game (which is oddly the last time the Bears won). For as much of a disaster as this season has been, there are building blocks for the future. Speaking of building blocks for the future, did yesterday intrigue anyone in Ben Johnson even more? Chicago’s defense was brutal and unfortunately appears to kind of quit on the season, but Detroit looked spectacular on offense and Johnson dug deep to show off what exactly he can do for an offense it felt like. Combine the reports before the game that Johnson is intrigued by the Bears’ job opening with the offensive game plan and execution yesterday, it sure does feel like the Bears’ job might be his top choice. Plus, with what Caleb Williams did in front of him yesterday, it’s hard to not think he might have been impressed. Speaking of the defense, I’m not sure what happened there. Outside of T.J. Edwards and Kyler Gordon, it kind of feels like the rest of the group just threw it on cruise control over the last few weeks with no intention of coming off. While Matt Eberflus had to be fired, it’s quite obvious he played a big part in the defense’s success. However, since he’s been gone, while the soft zones haven’t been working and there hasn’t been much of an adjustment, the effort level just feels like it’s plummeted. It’s been disappointing to watch for a unit that was so good to start the year. But I guess that disappointment has been on par with the season as a whole. © Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images The Braxton Jones injury was tough. His future in Chicago was uncertain, but he felt like a safe option that could be back next year if a left tackle replacement didn’t present itself. Now this ankle injury impacts that. I do think now it means he’ll be back for camp next season, but I’m not sure you can go into next year with him as your starting left tackle. Competing for the job, sure? But if both of the top two tackles in the draft don’t fall to the Bears, I’m not sure they can rely on Jones to be the surefire starter. We’ll see, I guess. As the weeks go on, the more I think I’m falling into the camp of being in favor of a new general manager next season. If a new coach wants to be aligned with a GM, I’m not sure you can extend Ryan Poles at this point. While he’s certainly done some good things, he’s responsible for this roster that is now 4-11 and seems to have a rotten culture. That culture was built and fostered by his leaders and his head coaching hire. His inability to even build an adequate offensive line has failed. His decision to draft an injured project from Yale at left tackle instead of a more NFL-ready option is a massive failure. He’s done some good things and if he’s back I won’t be livid, but If Kevin Warren wants to move on and bring in a GM to align with a new head coach, I’m fully on board with that.MORE: 5 GM Candidates to Consider If They Part Ways With Ryan Poles
