I feared the worst when Braxton Jones was carted off the field during the Chicago Bears’ Week 16 loss to the Detroit Lions. And while the road to a full recovery still figures to be a challenging one, it doesn’t seem as awful as initially believed.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shares what he has heard about the injury that put the Bears’ starting left tackle on the sidelines:
#Bears OT Braxton Jones, who was carted off yesterday, is believed to have suffered a fractured ankle, source says. He’s still undergoing tests, but as of now, it’s just the fibula, not the tibia, as well.Jones faces a four-month recovery, back long before training camp. pic.twitter.com/rqEfSpk3M7
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 23, 2024As Rapoport mentions above, Braxton Jones is still undergoing tests. So it is not as if we are out of the woods on the news front. However, a four-month recovery after suffering a fractured left ankle is better than an alternative of a more serious injury that could have lingered into training camp or even the 2025 regular season. That Jones could be back in the swing of things well before training camp opens its doors is a welcome bit of news. This might be the best-case scenario for the player and team.
Jones suffered the injury in the second quarter of the Beas’ 34-17 loss to the Lions after a play in which a Detroit defensive lineman awkwardly landed on him. The third-year starter had an air cast placed on his left leg and was carted off the field. Braxton Jones gave a thumbs-up on his way off to the locker room and was ruled out.
Monday’s Braxton Jones injury update is more encouraging than I thought it would be
I closed up shop last night wondering how a Braxton Jones injury would impact the Chicago Bears’ offseason plans. A long-term injury could have resulted in a major shift in the team’s offseason blueprint. But if it plays out with Jones being able to return before training camp, then maybe the Bears don’t need to drastically alter their plans.
Braxton Jones and Darnell Wright were playing well as a bookend tandem of tackles along the Bears’ offensive line. After Sunday’s action, Jones was Pro Football Focus’ 19th-highest-graded offensive tackle. Meanwhile, Wright’s recent string of strong performances has elevated his grade to a place where he is tied with Los Angeles Chargers stud rookie Joe Alt with the 16th-best grade among offensive tackles. The interior of Chicago’s offensive line has been a problematic revolving door of disappointment. But the tackles are OK.
With that being said, I wonder if the Bears will prioritize finding a long-term solution at left tackle this offseason via free agency or the NFL Draft. Because even though Braxton Jones is a solid starter, the 2025 season will be the final one of his rookie deal. I can’t imagine the Bears ironing out an extension with a player who will start the year by recovering from a serious injury. At least, I can’t see it happening early in the offseason. Maybe the two sides will talk shop after Jones proves to be healthy and solid after the recovery period,
As of right now, I feel as if the Bears’ best path to building an upgraded offensive line begins with drafting someone who could start their career at guard before transitioning into a tackle after Braxton Jones’ contract expires. University of Texas offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr. seems to fit that mold. The award-winning Longhorns tackle has the profile of a player who could play inside and out. So while we have a long way to go before we cross that bridge, I wanted to acknowledge the bridge’s existence.
In the end, I hope Braxton Jones has a full and speedy recovery. The Bears will miss his presence as they play their final two games of the 2024 regular season without him.
