Instant Bears Player Grades: Ben Johnson Aces His Interview

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson aced his interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching job today. Now, we have to hope the people who make those decisions can comprehend what they just saw.

Let’s hand out some instant grades.

    Offense

    QB Caleb Williams | B–

Ben Johnson aced his interview, and Caleb Williams aced his audition for Johnson. The Bears rookie quarterback had impressed Johnson in their first meeting, and his encore performance consisted of Williams completing 26-of-39 for 332 passing yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 107.5 passer rating. Williams also added 34 yards on the ground. In two games against the Lions this season, Williams has thrown for 588 passing yards, five touchdowns, 73 rushing yards, and zero interceptions. Hopefully, the next time we see Williams and Johnson on the same field, they will share a sideline.

    RB D’Andre Swift | D

Remember that stretch of games where D’Andre Swift was outstanding? Ah, good times. Swift managed 20 yards on nine carries (2.2) against his former team today. He did have 33 receiving yards on three catches out of the backfield, though.

    WR DJ Moore | C+

DJ Moore continues to rack up catches around the line of scrimmage, hauling in seven passes for 68 yards today. But he’s been absolutely nonexistent past the sticks for weeks.

    WR Rome Odunze | D+

Odunze had a big fourth down grab on a 50-50 ball, but he also caused a fumble on a handoff behind the line of scrimmage and was stripped trying to pick up a few extra yards on the following drive. The rookie wideout extended one drive for Chicago and gave Detroit two extra possessions.

    WR Keenan Allen | A+

Keenan Allen was playing for a contract today—wherever that might be—catching nine passes for 140 yards and a touchdown in the losing effort.

    TE Cole Kmet | B

Hey, something is better than nothing. Kmet entered today with one target since the last time these teams met and had two today, one of which resulted in a touchdown catch.

    Offensive Line | F

Per usual, pre-snap penalties and pressure were plentiful. Braxton Jones was carted off the field early, and Larry Borom was awful. This group needs no fewer than three starters in the offseason.

    Defense

    Defensive Line | F

No pass rush, no answers for the rushing attack, no hope. This unit, like the two behind it, just stunk today.

    Linebackers | F

It was another brutal day at the office for this unit.

    Secondary | F

So much for Jared Goff struggling in the cold. Goff torched this unit for 336 yards, three scores, and a 137.0 passer rating. Jaylon Johnson sprinkled in the typical untimely unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for crap-talking while down multiple scores.

    Special Teams

    K Cairo Santos | A

Santos was perfect on the day.

    P Tory Taylor | C

Tory Taylor averaged 40 yards on three punts today. Meh.

    Coaching

    Thomas Brown | D

The offense has taken a noticeable step back since Brown was elevated to interim head coach. Whatever the reason, it’s a reality. Brown was a fun story while it lasted, but his time as the head coach of the Chicago Bears is coming to an end in a couple of weeks.

    Eric Washington | F

The scoreboard speaks for itself here. The defense has continued to be abysmal since Washington took over.
