The Southern Travel Destination Everyone Should Visit in the U.S. at Least Once, According to Getaway Guru Darley Newman

If you're looking to travel domestically (whether that's to celebrate the New Year or are already planning trips for 2025), then you'll want to consider visiting down south. When you think of vacation destinations in the southern part of the United States, Disney World or Dollywood might come to mind. That said, there is a lot more in this popular geographic location aside from theme parks (believe it or not).We spoke with Darley Newman, travel guru and host of Travels with Darley on PBS, to find out her favorite southern travel destination in the U.S. that should be next on your itinerary—here's what she had to say.Related: The U.S. Travel Destination Everyone Should Visit at Least Once, According to Getaway Guru Samantha Brown

Newman suggests that people plan a visit to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina if they are looking to travel to the south. "There’s a reason that this beach destination has become so popular—the wide, sandy beaches are simply beautiful, but there’s also a lot to do away from the sand for locals and travelers alike," she explains. "I love the mix of nostalgic, retro experiences with modern fun that’s great for multiple ages and generations."Related: The Surprising European Travel Destination Everyone Should Visit at Least Once, According to Getaway Guru Samantha Brown

    Newman's Restaurant Recommendations

If you're looking for restaurants to dine out during your time in Myrtle Beach, then Newman has a couple of recommendations you won't want to miss out on. "Chef Heidi Vukov’s Croissants Bistro & Bakery has delicious pastries, muffins and coffee," she tells Parade. "[And] if you like waffles, you have to try Johnny D’s, where Chef Jamie Daskalis serves up decadent red velvet waffles topped with house-made cream cheese icing and seasonal pumpkin spice waffles. This is a great restaurant for families with kids!" Additionally, Newman shares that Chef Heidi has Hook and Barrel, where she recommends ordering the bourbon bacon and the local seafood. "It was also built with sustainability in mind, something I try to find on my travels and support," she adds.Related: The Caribbean Travel Destination Everyone Should Visit at Least Once, According to Getaway Guru Samantha Brown

Newman's Top 6 Travel Tips for This Southern Spot

Although Myrtle Beach has some laid back vibes, Newman tells Parade that this southern destination is home to some of the top resorts and hotels in the state."Ellie Beach Resort, an upscale oceanfront property with a great location, is one of my top picks," she says. "It's part of the Tapestry by Hilton Collection if you are looking to add to your points. The location is a short drive from the airport, Market Common (a shopping and dining area) and also places like Brookgreen Gardens and Myrtle Beach State Park, so you get a good mix of nature and entertainment."

    2. Visit the Hammock Shops

You really can't get a feel for a destination without trying some of the local food and going shopping."The Hammock Shops in Pawleys Island have been around since the 1930s and are a great place to stretch your legs and shop for unique gift items, as well as dine on good Southern dishes like boiled peanuts and macaroni and cheese at places like Local," she tells Parade.

This isn't really a secret since the word beach is in the name, however, Newman recommends embracing your inner child and diving into the fun with retro and modern beach experiences."Along the boardwalk, you can ride the Sky Wheel, play Skee-Ball and shop for quirky finds at the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove, which has been around and family-owned since the 1940s," she says. "Also nearby is a local brewery, Grand Strand Brewing Company, situated beside the Dolly Llama, where you can indulge in a blue-tongue-inducing ice cream experience."Related: 25 Picture-Perfect Beach Vacation Ideas Where You Can Soak up the Sun in Style

    4. Visit during off season

Although Myrtle Beach has gained a reputation for being a popular summer vacation destination, Newman urges travelers not to rule out traveling in the off season. "The weather is usually mild over South Carolina winters, so you can still stroll by the ocean and also enjoy outdoor shopping with less crowds," she tells Parade. It's also during off season that you'll find better discounts and rates on hotel stays in Myrtle Beach, and who doesn't want that?

According to Newman, there are a lot of holiday experiences to enjoy off season in Myrtle Beach from Brookgreen Gardens Nights of a Thousand Candles to the Carolina Opry Christmas Special, which is a holiday tradition for many. "The theater itself transforms into a winter wonderland with over 35 Christmas trees, miles of lights, countless ornaments and snowy accents," she shares.

    6. Get in touch with nature

Aside from the beach, Myrtle Beach is also home to lots of natural beauty and luscious greenery. "Myrtle Beach State Park is a unique place to explore the beach and also a peaceful oceanfront maritime forest," Newman explains. "You drive off the highway and you enter this surprising, protected green space with breathtaking views from its fishing pier." Additionally, she recommends setting aside at least half a day to visit Brookgreen Gardens, where you can wander stunning botanical gardens, admire the nation’s largest collection of American figurative sculptures, meet native breeds of animals like Marsh Tacky horses at the Low Country Zoo, and explore history.
