Plowshares is celebrating the holidays with a community honey-glazed ham feast.
For 41 years, Plowshares has proudly fulfilled its mission “that no one in our community go hungry.”
Plowshares invites the community to join them for their Christmas Eve Feast in the Community Dining Room from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24.
Plowshares Executive Director Michelle Shaw says, “We’ll be cooking up a delicious Honey Glazed Ham dinner with all the traditional fixings for our Meals-On-Wheels seniors and dining room guests. We will also be passing out gift bags for our guests as well as toys for the little ones.”

In-kind donations can be brought to Plowshares at 1346 S. State St. in Ukiah Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Program Manager Junior De Los Santos says, “We are so grateful for all we have received! We are still in need of some more fried onions, macaroni, cheese, cream, pies and Cool Whip, and rolls and butter.”
Shaw says, “I love the holiday season. People’s hearts are full of warmth, and it’s amazing to see the community coming together to help those in need.” Shaw continues, “We are serving Christmas Day with a special Thank you to The Hunger Express team, led by Carrie Brigham and accompanied by Plowshares’ Chef Christian Weissleder.”
Plowshares gives back to our community by feeding its hungry seniors, men, women, and children 365 days a year with their senior Meals-On-Wheels and Community Dining Room Programs. “Over 97,500 free meals this past year!” says Shaw.

It is also a friendly, safe space where hungry members of our community can have a free meal without fear of judgment.
This Holiday Feast, Plowshares plans to prepare over 400 meals. Each day, Plowshares’ volunteer cooks work hard to prepare a delicious meal for 250 to 300 guests. Their daily average in the dining room ranges between 60 and 100 guests, and there are roughly 220 seniors on the Meals-On-Wheels program.
“Without our supporters and dedicated volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” says Shaw. Plowshares is run primarily by volunteers and supported by the community, with 82 percent of funds coming from local businesses and individual community members.

Plowshares’ 2024 Winter Appeal
Following is additional information from Plowshares about its annual Winter Appeal, which raises funds to help the nonprofit continue its mission “that no one in our community go hungry.” Plowshares has been a staple in Ukiah for the past 41 years, turning charitable donations from the community into hot meals for our hometown’s hungry and vulnerable population since 1983.
Give the gift of a full stomach this holiday season – by donating to Plowshares!
Plowshares is a community dining center that has been serving our hungry population for the past 41 years. We provide nutritious meals and resources to hungry local seniors, men, women, and children. We are supported by Mendocino County’s rich culture of volunteerism and generosity. We rely on this support to operate our Senior Meals-on-Wheels Program, our Community Dining Room program, our Community Garden, and to serve as a hub for connection to community resources.
Hungry seniors, men, women, and children visit our Community Dining Room for daily homemade, hot, nutritious meals. Additionally, Plowshares delivers roughly 220 free, freshly prepared meals to our Senior Meals-On-Wheels homebound seniors 365 days a year.
Because of your generosity, we provide nutritious meals to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. We can continue to serve our local hungry seniors, men, women, and children with your help.
Every dollar you donate goes to providing meals to hungry community members. We do this cost-efficiently, thanks to our relationships with local food merchants, restaurants, and food banks. Each day, the Plowshares van makes rounds to collect regular donations from these community partners. In addition, many individuals drop off donations such as fruit, vegetables, eggs, canned goods, spices, and coffee from their pantries and gardens. Some also remember Plowshares when making their shopping lists and purchase food, extra socks, personal care items, or pet food to donate.
We ask that you commit to supporting Plowshares during this holiday season by mailing a check to PO Box 475, Ukiah, CA 95482, or you can sign up for a monthly Credit Card donation that keeps giving for the whole year. To donate online, visit www.plowsharesfeeds.org.
For more information about Plowshares or how to get involved, call 707-462-8582.
Our staff, volunteers and donors support ongoing efforts to ensure that Plowshares will always be here, providing food, a comforting word, and respect for everyone. Our mission is “that no one in our community go hungry.”
