In the wake of some depressing Chicago sports media news, I just want to take a moment to say thank you.
I am so incredibly fortunate to be in the position that I’m in. Few industries are as cut-throat as the media business, and I’ve watched far too many friends, colleagues, and people that I admire have opportunities ripped away from them. To those who experienced that at CHGO this week, I send my regards and wish you all the best. I feel positive that a new door will open for each of those laid off, as it always does for talented people. Still, I know that doesn’t make this current situation sting any less.
Again, thank YOU for sticking with me through the past few years and giving me space to grow as a writer and content creator. God knows the Bulls haven’t made it easy, but I will continue to do my best to keep fans up-to-date and engaged for as long as I’m given that opportunity.
Cue awkward transition …
A light December schedule has the Chicago Bulls itching for more competition. Following practice in Boston on Wednesday, Bulls players broke out a round of 1v1. The team released a two-minute-long video that shares some of the matchups, including Zach LaVine vs. Matas Buzelis, Torrey Craig vs. Julian Phillips, and Patrick Williams vs. Dalen Terry. While this could be the editors working their magic, nobody looked more locked in than Buzelis. The rookie’s best moment came when he got Patrick Williams in the air with a stutter step and drove for the slam. The video also started with him trying to stay in front of LaVine, only to have the two-time All-Star finish a tough layup. Buzelis proceeded to slap the basket padding before using some colorful language to tell the camera operator to look away. I know it’s a tad hyperbolic, but that reaction is just as encouraging as anything we’ve seen in-game this season. The 20-year-old comes off as a competitive lunatic in the best way possible. He looked truly enraged that he gave up that layup, and this is the exact kind of energy you want someone with his raw skill to possess. To be honest, I have not felt this optimistic about a Bulls draft pick in quite some time. The only recent selection that gave me anywhere close to this same feeling in their rookie campaign was Ayo Dosunmu. And, to be clear, Buzelis’ ceiling is a lot higher. There is just something to be said about how comfortable he looks on an NBA court. Does that mean he’s making all the right decisions? No, but it does mean he moves with purpose and understands how to make his presence felt out of structure. While I’m not trying to throw any under the bus, just compare how Buzelis looks this early in his NBA career to Patrick Williams or Dalen Terry. It’s night and day. via © Ken Blaze-Imagn Images NBA Insider Marc Stein joined the CHGO Bulls show on Wednesday to talk about the ongoing Zach LaVine trade rumors. He reiterated that the Nuggets have their eye on the elite scorer, but he also stressed that a deal is nowhere near imminent.“I have no doubt that the Nuggets do have a genuinely high level of interest in Zach LaVine,” Stein said. “But first they have to decide are they willing to give up Michael Porter. Are the Bulls prepared to take on Porter’s contract?
I think the Nuggets are wrestling with, as much as they know they need an infusion of shot creation and some dynamics on offense that come from someone other than The Joker, they’re really fond of Michael Porter there.”
Do I believe the Nuggets are high on MPJ? Absolutely. However, they also have arguably the best player in the league and must do everything they can to set him up for success. Anyone who believes LaVine is not a clear upgrade from MPJ is kidding themselves. The only real hold-up here should be the money owed. Denver isn’t typically the kind of franchise that runs up this high of a cap sheet, so they have to decide if they are ready to step out of their comfort zone. If they want another title in a loaded Western Conference, they might have to be! Ricky O’Donnell of SBNation also shared some of his thoughts on why a LaVine-Nuggets deal would make sense for both sides. — Ricky O'Donnell (@SBN_Ricky) December 18, 2024 The Bulls invited some Chicago students to the Advocate Center for a basketball tournament, and many of the players stuck around to coach them up! The video shared by Bulls Community is awesome. twitter.com/bullscommunity/status/1869529756586090647 Find someone who endlessly gushes about you as much as Joakim Noah endlessly gushes about Derrick Rose. In a recent appearance on FanDuel TV’s Run It Back, the Bulls legend made Rose’s HOF case and shared his excitement for the upcoming Rose retirement ceremony on Jan. 4, 2025.“Hall of Fame for sure. It’s tough because his story, it’s a painful story. There is a lot of adversity in it. It’s a big what if story, if he hadn’t got hurt. You look at his highlights before the injuries, and you’ve never seen anything like that. The way he hooped, how explosive he was, the hunger. His game really represented where he was from in a different way,” Noah said.
It looks like the Bulls will dodge one of the better backup bigs in the NBA …Atlanta Hawks center Onyeka Okongwu (left knee inflammation) will be out for at least the next four games against the Spurs, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, and the Bulls. Okongwu be re-evaluated in approximately one week, team says. pic.twitter.com/NyKbrhLcfS
— Michael Scotto (@MikeAScotto) December 18, 2024 A closer look at the Bears head coach candidates continues with Patrick’s evaluation of Mike Vrabel. I have to be honest, he may be my top choice. As attractive as Ben Johnson is, I wouldn’t mind someone with a little more of a proven track record. The Chicago Cubs’ quest for Jesus Luzardo may have come to a screeching halt.
