‘Wouldn’t bet against it’ – Shock Premier League promotion for Wrexham not ruled out by Simon Jordan

Simon Jordan has admitted he didn’t expect Wrexham’s ascent under their Hollywood owners but now thinks it could continue all the way to the top.

The former Crystal Palace owner turned talkSPORT host was responding after the Welsh side achieved promotion to the Championship in record-breaking fashion.

Wrexham have done it again, and their ownership has been applauded by JordanGetty

It was the first time a club has secured three consecutive promotions in England’s top five tiers, and never has such a feat been so public.

Hollywood comedy royalty Ryan Reynolds has led the charge as a co-owner alongside It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney, and they’ve earned Jordan’s respect.

“I think they’ve certainly shown a model that works very well,” he told co-host Jim White.

“What I said at the time was when I was listening to the combined wealth of these two individuals and then suggesting that they didn’t get promotion that season that a million pound was going to do for them, I felt it was a bit silly, silly conversation, a bit reductive.

“But the more I’ve looked at the reality of what they’ve been able to achieve, how they’ve been able to utilise the digital presences that they have and the commercial interest that’s been generated off the back of it, you have to give them a lot of currency.”

Enough currency that the Premier League is attainable? Jordan isn’t ruling it out.

Explaining what’s in their way in the Championship, he said: “There wasn’t the Sunderlands and the Sheffield Uniteds and the Ipswiches that are languishing in those leagues.

“So I’m not diminishing their challenge, their achievement, because I think they’ve done brilliantly well, but they’re amongst a group of potential Hollywood clubs now.

“They have got movie stars above their name but they’ve also got a lot of very well-heeled, very wealthy people. I wouldn’t put it past Wrexham, with the momentum they’ve got, to go up into the Premier League.

“I don’t think they’ll come back down again, I would be amazed, pleasantly amazed if they go straight out of this division into the Premier League, but with the momentum they’ve got you wouldn’t bet against it.”

Big signings like Jay Rodriguez have drawn ire from the rest of the league, but Jordan doesn’t see a problem with itGetty

Wrexham’s success has come with vast spending, causing debate among EFL fans over whether it’s been fair or not.

New financial fair play rules will be brought in for League One and League Two ahead of the new season, with Wrexham able to finance their ascent previously beforehand.

Jordan, though, isn’t on the side of those condemning their strategy, instead explaining how it shows football is changing.

“I think it’s a great story for Wrexham, I think it’s a different story for football,” he said.

“It’s showing a different model, a different entertainment angle, it shows you that entertainment wrapped around sport now is the game in town.

“When you start seeing Welsh flags on various versions of Deadpool in the film, you know it’s crossed over.

“It’s crossed over when you start seeing the commerciality of what these two guys’ names have achieved alongside the documentary that was made about them and the commercial interest that enables them to potentially build a new stadium.

“So it’s all on top now, it’s all there, they’ve broken the back of the opportunity, they really have.

“This is the toughest promotion now, but the fact of the matter is they’ve now put themselves in that space which makes the football club worth a lot more than it was in the first place.”
