Spoilers ahead for Season 6 of Virgin River.
The sixth season of Virgin River ended in wedded bliss for Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack (Martin Henderson)—and it may have ended with them becoming parents-to-be as well. After Mel goes to the Virgin River Birthing Center, her pregnant patient Marley reveals that the couple who was meant to adopt her unborn child got cold feet, and that she was hoping Mel would step in to replace them.
“There’s this bombshell of a revelation that Marley wants Mel to be the parent,” Henderson exclusively told Parade. “I think that was a really nice surprise.”
“It’s a wonderful cliffhanger to lead the audience into Season 7, where now the big carrot dangling is, 'Oh, my God Mel and Jack are going to have this family,'" he added. "Something that they assumed was going to take a while through the adoption process.“
With the couple settled into their beautifully renovated farm, complete with a barn and a horse that Jack nursed back to health, it's arguably the perfect time for them embark on parenthood.

So, what kind of father does Henderson believe Jack will make? "Jack is a very principled man of his word and a man of honor. I think his commitment to his children and their wellbeing will be unwavering," he said.
"I imagine it will be fun to see how he walks that line between wanting to develop a child’s good character and therefore teaching them right from wrong, but also that balance of accepting the imperfection of people, especially kids, and all their transgressions and tantrums. I’m sure there’ll be a lot of drama and probably comedy around just that task of parenting and raising children. ...I think it’ll be fun to watch them grow as a family. I joke around that it feels a little bit reminiscent of the TV show Little House on the Prairie.”

As for what Henderson thought of Mel and Jack's wedding, he told Parade he was happy to give the "hard-core romantics" the payoff they were hoping for.
"[Mel and Jack] are coming to this marriage with a life that’s already been lived," he said. "At this point, the audience has watched them kind of share their mutual grief and their trauma. Jack has worked through his PTSD, his alcoholism and his family issues. Mel, of course, has learned to love again and trust again."
"They’re kind of able to say, 'I know all your sh-t, I know all your baggage and it’s fine because I’ve got it, too. And I’m learning to accept that about myself,'" he added.
Overall, he said, they're mature adults. "People will sort of bury their heads in the sands about their issues. But these characters have managed to find the courage to confront their trauma," he concluded. "I think they’re sort of saying, 'There’s darkness and there’s light, and that’s okay. I accept that in you and I accept that in myself.'"
Season 6 of Virgin River is streaming on Netflix, along with Seasons 1 through 5.
