Ravichandran Ashwin farewell: Anil Kumble wanted “champion to go past 619” record

Ravichandran Ashwin pulled off an Anil Kumble on Wednesday as he announced his retirement from international cricket midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The former India spinner heaped praise on his Tamil Nadu counterpart and hailed him as a “champion” of the longest format of the game. Ashwin decided to hang up his boots after 13 long years and has been one of the best Test cricketers that India has ever produced.

Anil Kumble’s tribute to Ashwin

In a video shared by ESPNCricinfo, Anil Kumble congratulated Ashwin for his fantastic career and for being a champion bowler and a match-winner for India. The Karnataka spinner said that he was disappointed that he ended his career without going past the 619-wicket mark in Tests, a record held by Kumble himself.

“Congratulations Ash on a fantastic career. You have been a champion bowler and all-rounder for India and will be surely missed. It is not easy carrying that kind of expectations day in and day out. You have done that and have been a match-winner for India. I for one am a bit disappointed that you ended your career today. Ideally, I would have wanted to see you go beyond 619. But I’m sure you have your own reasons for that,” Anil Kumble said.
