The San Diego Unified School District on Tuesday reaffirmed a commitment to equity, civil rights and safety with the passage of a board resolution, among a slate of new initiatives.
The document presented to the board was entitled, “Re-affirming the Values of the San Diego Unified School District as a Welcoming District for All Students.”
Earlier in the day the interim Superintendent’s Office reinforced protocols with school administrators while launching a new public website titled, “Protecting our Students & Staff –Equity, Civil Rights, & Safety Resources.”
The site is intended, the district said, “to support any student and family who experiences harassment, discrimination or bias-based harm.” The aim is to help them, along with staff, better understand their rights and access information about laws, resources and service providers.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula said that though “national and global events may challenge our sense of stability,” in San Diego schools educators must “remain steadfast in one essential truth: every student, regardless of how they identify or where they come from, deserves to feel safe, supported and inspired to thrive.
“Our responsibility as educators extends beyond academics. We are the architects of environments where young people can dream boldly and learn authentically. I reaffirm our district’s commitment as a Welcoming District — a place where students experience belonging, joy, and limitless possibility,” Bagula said.
The changes come following a presidential campaign in which President-elect Donald Trump targeted, among others, Haitians and transgender individuals, while promising mass deportations of immigrants.
The district’s web launch and board resolution were among a series of steps announced Tuesday including forming an Equity, Civil Rights and Safety Task Force to monitor incidents of discrimination and address problematic trends, updating guidance on the district’s online reporting form for such concerns and establishing a new internal reporting hotline for school administrators.
Training also has been scheduled for district staff to ensure they are able to support students, families and their colleagues should troubling incidents occur.
