The Atlanta Falcons are making the switch at quarterback.
Kirk Cousins is out. Michael Penix Jr. is in.
Here is the news from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and the explanation from Falcons Head Coach Raheem Morris:
“Afer review we have made the decision Michael Penix Jr. will be the Atlanta Falcons starting quarterback moving forward. This was a football decision and we are fully focused on preparing the team for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.”
Wow. I can’t say I saw this one coming. But perhaps the Falcons losing four of their last five games should have been a sign that changes were on the horizon.
It is Michael Penix Jr. time in Atlanta
Benching Kirk Cousins means the Falcons are set to insert Michael Penix Jr. into the starting lineup. Atlanta is 7-7 and has a 31 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to The Athletic’s projections. With the season winding down and opportunities to win games dwindling, the Falcons are going with the nuclear option and turning to the rookie in hopes of finding a spark. Good luck with that…
The Atlanta Falcons shocked the football world by using the No. 8 pick in last April’s NFL Draft to take Michael Penix Jr., a talented quarterback prospect from the University of Washington who was coming off a season in which he finished as the Heisman Trophy runner-up. Atlanta’s path to drafting Penix is a story that Bears fans know all too well. And with former Chicago Bears GM Ryan Pace working in Atlanta’s front office, it was impossible to ignore the similarities between the circuitous route the Falcons took to draft Penix and how Chicago went about drafting Mitchell Trubisky. For the sake of Falcons fans, I hope this story has a happier ending.
Speaking of stories with unsettling endings, I wonder what happens with the Falcons and Kirk Cousins. Remember, Atlanta brought in Cousins on a four-year deal worth $180 million. Going to the bench after just 14 games probably isn’t what Kirk had in mind when he signed the deal. There will be an awful lot of dead money that the Falcons will have to eat on the Cousins deal. But with the NFL being such a QB-starved league and the upcoming draft class not looking too hot, I don’t doubt that Atlanta will find a trade partner. But who will it be?
