Keely Hodgkinson became the fourth successive woman to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year, beating darting prodigy Luke Littler and England cricketer Joe Root in a public vote.
Hodgkinson went unbeaten across nine races in 2024, running a second faster than any other woman in the world and becoming the face of Team GB at the Paris Olympics.
The Atherton-born star retained her European Championship gold from 2022 and set a new British 800m record at London’s Diamond League meeting in July, with 1:54:61 making her the sixth-fastest woman ever over two laps.

Hodgkinson’s coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows also shared the Coach of the Year award, having worked with the star since she was an early teen.
Meanwhile Littler made up for defeat in the main award by claiming the Young Sports Personality of the Year crown, beating skateboarder Sky Brown and double-gold-winning para-swimmer William Ellard.
He matched Phil Taylor for the best-ever SPOTY result by a darts player, and became the first from his sport to win YSPOTY.
Littler’s stunning run to the 2024 PDC World Championship final has turbocharged darts’ profile over the past year. The 4.8m people who watched him lose 7-4 to Luke Humphries was a record for a non-footballing event on Sky Sports.
“The Nuke” goes into the 2025 Worlds as the bookies’ favourite having won 10 titles this year – three more than any other player – and picking up more than £1.1m in prize money. He was also named Google’s Athlete of the Year – only Kate Middleton and Donald Trump trended higher in 2024.
Littler has taken his newfound fame in his stride, hitting five nine-darters – a perfect leg – this year, as well as more competitive 180s than any other player.
Despite some believing he would struggle with the competition, he stormed to victory in the 17-night Premier League, contested by eight of the world’s best. He also won the World Series final and the Grand Slam, before losing the Players Championship final to Humphries last month.

Capping off a brilliant night for North East sport, rugby league side Wigan Warriors were named Team of the Year after claiming a historic quadruple.
Warriors won the World Club Championship, Super League Grand Final, Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield – every major tournament they entered in 2024 – replicating their legendary 1994 side.
And the first trophy of the night was the Helen Rollason Award, recognising outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. This was presented to Dr Mark Prince, father of Kiyan Prince, a footballer in Queens Park Rangers’ academy who was stabbed to death aged 15 in 2006.
Prince launched the Kiyan Prince Foundation in early 2007 to combat knife crime and help make young people make positive life decisions.
The Unsung Hero award went to 90-year-old Jean Paton, a volunteer at Salterns Sailing club in Lymington, Hampshire, topping a 15-strong shortlist organised by region.
