Cardinals claim DB Jammie Robinson from Panthers

The Arizona Cardinals claimed safety Jammie Robinson off waivers from the Carolina Panthers on Monday, the team announced.

The 2023 fifth-round NFL Draft pick joins Arizona’s active roster ahead of a matchup against his former team. The Cardinals visit the Panthers on Sunday after picking up a win over the New England Patriots with three games to play.

Carolina waived Robinson on Friday before a loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

The Panthers picked the 5-foot-11 defensive back with the No. 145 overall selection out of Florida State. Robinson played 15 games with two starts as a rookie, primarily lining up in the slot on defense but receiving most of his reps on special teams.

His opportunities have plummeted this year, as he had been inactive over the last six games before getting cut. Overall, he has 21 NFL games of experience.

In college, Robinson led FSU with 99 tackles in 2021 and 2022 to earn First Team All-ACC honors in both years. He previously played for South Carolina in 2019-20.

Ahead of the 2023 draft, NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein projected he would land in the fourth round with a chance to offer teams a quality backup who could develop into a starter.

Short-armed defensive back with good toughness, a compact frame and the versatility for consideration at nickel back or safety. He thrives when playing downhill, where anticipation and burst provide quick closure to make plays on the throw. He has twitchy feet to match up from the slot but tends to stay behind if he falls behind in the route. He’s a run supporter with a nose for the ball but average stopping power. Robinson lacks ideal measurables and was unimpressive in NFL Scouting Combine athletic testing, but he’s a feisty defender whose success could be determined by how a team decides to deploy him.

The Cardinals had two open roster spots after placing running back Emari Demercado and punter Blake Gillikin on injured reserve on Saturday, ending their seasons.

He is the fifth safety on the roster alongside Budda Baker, Jalen Thomson, Dadrion Taylor-Demerson and Joey Blount.
