Three Bears Coaching Candidates Make a Splash, Caleb’s Streak, Reasons For Optimism, and Other Bears Bullets

It’s a game-day Monday for the Chicago Bears. Are you ready for some football?

The Bears enter Week 15 with nothing more to play for other than pride and development after being officially eliminated from postseason contention on Sunday afternoon when the Commanders beat the Saints. I have been trying to unpack the reality that the Bears were set to miss the playoffs for the sixth time in eight years that we have been together as a site for a few weeks. It’s not as easy as you might otherwise believe it would be. Ultimately, I found myself landing here: The conservative-by-nature projection modules that are soulless and bias-free spit out a modest uptick in results (many of them had this team around 9 wins) that these Bears still fell woefully short of reaching. A failure to clear such a low bar is damning on so many levels. Everyone at Halas Hall (players, coaches, staffers, management, ownership) needs to do some real soul-searching. I realize that self-awareness and self-assessment aren’t everyone’s thing, but this franchise needs to get its act together and figure it out. And it needs to do so by starting from within because I’ve had it up to here with the finger-pointing. Maybe I’ll die alone on this hill. And if I do, I can do so knowing I had a heckuva run. But I still stand on the preseason buzz being justified. This wasn’t created out of thin air. Reasonable, respected, level-headed thinkers (in addition to the soulless computers) were projecting improvement by the Bears based on the additions they made this offseason. That smarter people than yours truly saw the arrow for this squad pointing up makes its failures in 2024 hurt that much more. For me, the shortcomings are an indication of how important coaching and preparedness for the moment matters.

Even with all that being said, the Bears play a football game today. The folks at Bears Wire even have reasons for optimism. No, seriously. There is always a glimmer of hope to be seen if you allow yourself to open your eyes. OK, so this game doesn’t matter much to them, they could still play spoiler for a Minnesota Vikings team that has an angle to the No. 1 seed after the Detroit Lions fell to the Buffalo Bills. The Tribune has five things to watch on Monday Night Football, which is also worth reading as you prepare to watch tonight’s game. Caleb Williams having a streak of interception-free football is nice, but Patrick Finley (Sun-Times) does not see the interception-less streak as worth preserving and would like to see QB1 push it a little more. I’d like that, too. Bears QB Caleb Williams | Mandatory Credit: Daniel Bartel-Imagn Images I thought it was worth sharing here that three potential Bears head coach candidates (Lions OC Ben Johnson, Bills OC Joe Brady, and Buccaneers OC Liam Coen) had big days at the office with their respective teams. All three of those teams scored 40+ points and racked up 500+ yards. Is this how the other side lives? A common thread among the trio is that each allows their quarterback to be themselves and play their game. Each of those coordinators has tailored their schemes to the strengths of their respective quarterback. These guys let their QBs be playmakers and it makes for compelling football that is worth watching. Speaking of head coach candidates, you can cross Marcus Freeman off the list. He has signed a contract extension with Notre Dame. (NBC Sports) Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell on the controversial onside kick decision: “I wish I hadn’t done it.” Ahhhh, to have a coach who knows what it means to be accountable and not days after. It must be nice. I don’t know if I have ever been more wrong about a coach than I was on Campbell. Who saw this coming? Mike Tomlin is the most GIF-able coach in sports…
