Paul Finebaum makes a weekly appearance on the McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning Show where he talks all things college football. With the College Football Playoff starting next weekend and the transfer portal being busy, there is plenty for Finebaum to talk about.
However, he also brought up the point that Oklahoma coach Brent Venables will be entering the 2025 season on the proverbial hot seat.
“I think he’s in a very precarious position,” Finebaum said. “He got the vote of confidence at the end of the year, which really meant that let’s not talk about his future right now. We believe in him. He’s got a very strong AD in Joe Castiglione, but outside of the Alabama game, he really doesn’t have much to show.”
The Sooners are used to competing for championships and CFP appearances. Oklahoma has been to the CFP 4 times, which is tied with Georgia for the 4th most. Only Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State have more. The Sooners have won 6 games in 2 of the last 3 regular seasons, and haven’t been in the CFP since 2019.
Oklahoma fans are used to winning, and Finebaum thinks they will start to lose their patience if things don’t change next year.
“I think this year becomes very critical for him. Oklahoma folks are not used to this roller coaster ride that Oklahoma has been on,” Finebaum said. “I think he’s in okay shape, but I wouldn’t try to put another mediocre season on the board out there. That program will not be patient for long.”
