In a concerning turn of events, Detroit Pistons forward Tim Hardaway Jr. exited the game against the Miami Heat on Tuesday due to a frightening injury.
The incident occurred during the third quarter of the NBA Cup matchup when Hardaway sustained a blow to the head from Miami's Bam Adebayo while defending. After hitting the floor, he attempted to defend a layup from Tyler Herro, only to take another significant hit to his head.
Following the second impact, Hardaway had to leave the game in a wheelchair. Initially, the first hit seemed to stun him, but he managed to get back on his feet and continued to defend. However, during an attempt to draw a charge, he collided with Herro, leading to another fall. This time, both Herro and Pistons center Jalen Duren landed on him.
A social media user succinctly expressed their concern, posting, “Prayers for Tim Hardaway. Wishing him a speedy recovery,” along with a folded hands emoji, without delving into the specifics of the injury or its implications for the Pistons.
Earlier in the game, Hardaway had also been accidentally elbowed by Adebayo, which caused him to briefly hit the ground but he was able to recover quickly. Later, when he collided with Herro, Duren also attempted to contest the shot, inadvertently striking Hardaway's head with his knee, exacerbating the already vulnerable area. With the series of blows he endured, it’s difficult to fathom the level of pain he experienced. The collision seemed to cause Hardaway's head to hit the court, prompting him to clutch it in pain. He remained on the floor for an extended period while medical staff attended to him, and it appeared he was bleeding as his teammates gathered nearby.
Eventually, Hardaway was transported off the court in a wheelchair, a towel draped over his head. NBA insider Chris Haynes later reported that Hardaway underwent a CAT scan, which came back negative, although he did require stitches for the cut on his head.
Before his unfortunate injury, Hardaway had contributed 11 points to the game, shooting 3-for-6 from the field. At the time of his exit, the Pistons were leading 64-59, and they ultimately secured a hard-fought victory, winning 123-121 in overtime.
