The Indianapolis Colts faced a disappointing defeat against the Buffalo Bills, losing 30-20 at Lucas Oil Stadium. This marked the Colts' third consecutive loss, with quarterback Joe Flacco's performance being a significant factor in the outcome. Flacco, who stepped in for Anthony Richardson, struggled immensely, throwing four interceptions—including a pick-six on the very first play of the game . The Colts’ offense failed to capitalize on opportunities created by their defense, scoring only three points off two turnovers forced by the Bills.
The AFC East-leading Bills have topped 30 points in four straight games and improved to 8-2 for the first time since 1993. They earned their first win at Indianapolis since 1998 with Allen's receiving corps depleted by injuries.
The defense delivered for the Bills this time, logging four sacks, picking off Flacco three times and recovering a fumble by Flacco to put Allen in position to cash in.
“I thought the defense, the takeaways was a big-time difference in the game,” coach Sean McDermott said. “I think they’re just a very competitive group, they take a lot of pride in not letting each other down.”
The passing game had no explosiveness to it as Flacco lived on short and intermediate passes. And it couldn't avoid the danger of turnovers, as they had four of them; or sacks at inopportune times, like on a fourth down.
This was a playoff-worthy team beating one that isn't playing at that level in a fairly predictable way. But with the Colts dropping to 4-6 after benching Richardson in order to make the playoffs, we have some things to discuss.
The Colts responded with Taylor's 59-yard run, which set up the first of two field goals by Matt Gay. After Indy's defense stopped the Bills on fourth down, Flacco capitalized with a 2-yard TD pass to Tyler Goodson.
Allen's interception on the Bills' ensuing series set up the field goal that gave Indy a 13-10 lead, but Allen quickly regained control with his 13-yard TD run. Tyler Bass made field goals for Buffalo at the end of the first half and early in the fourth quarter, and Cook sealed the win with a 2-yard TD run early in the fourth.
Despite some individual successes, such as Jonathan Taylor's commendable rushing effort of 114 yards on 21 carries , the overall offensive unit faltered. The inability to maintain consistency and generate effective plays was evident throughout the game. Furthermore, while the Colts' defense managed to sack Josh Allen twice and force turnovers, they ultimately allowed 416 total yards and 30 points . This combination of offensive ineptitude and defensive lapses led to yet another frustrating outing for Indianapolis.
