MLB Teams Eye Japanese Sensation Roki Sasaki

Roki Sasaki, the talented 23-year-old pitcher from the Chiba Lotte Marines, is making headlines as he prepares to transition to Major League Baseball (MLB) this offseason. On Saturday, the Marines announced their decision to initiate the posting process, allowing Sasaki to join a major league team in North America.

Sasaki is anticipated to be one of the most sought-after pitchers available in the upcoming free agency market. In the current season, he showcased his exceptional skills by posting an impressive 10-5 record with a 2.35 ERA over 18 games, striking out a remarkable 129 batters in 111 innings pitched.

Under MLB regulations, because he is under the age of 25, Sasaki will be classified as an international amateur free agent, which means he will be subject to bonus pool limits. Consequently, his initial contract is expected to be a minor league deal, with a maximum value in the seven-figure range.

The Chiba Lotte Marines will benefit financially from this posting, receiving a percentage fee based on the size of Sasaki’s eventual contract with a major league team. However, the exact date when Sasaki will officially be posted remains uncertain, which will trigger a 45-day period for him to sign with a major league club.

Sasaki played a pivotal role in helping Japan secure victory in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Known for his electrifying fastball, which has been clocked at an impressive 102.5 mph, he holds a career record of 29 wins and 15 losses with a stellar 2.10 ERA across four seasons with the Marines, which were unfortunately marred by injuries. Notably, he pitched a perfect game against the Orix Buffaloes in April 2022, achieving a remarkable 13 consecutive strikeouts and finishing the game with a total of 19 strikeouts.

In a statement shared by the Marines on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Sasaki expressed his gratitude to the team for supporting his aspirations to play in the MLB. He reflected on his five years with the Marines, acknowledging the challenges he faced but emphasizing his focus on baseball and the backing he received from teammates, staff, and fans. Sasaki concluded by stating his determination to rise from a minor league contract to become the best player in the world, aiming to fulfill the expectations of those who have supported him throughout his journey.
