Pedestrian, Apparently Crossing Street Against Light, Killed in Escondido

An Escondido Police cruiser. Photo courtesy Escondido Police. A car struck and killed a pedestrian in front of North County Mall Wednesday, authorities reported. The fatal accident in the 200 block of East Via Rancho Parkway occurred shortly before 5:30 a.m., according to Escondido police. The victim, a man, 55, died at the scene, despite lifesaving efforts on the part of witnesses, officers and paramedics. His name was withheld pending family notification. Initial evidence indicated that the pedestrian was crossing the street to the south against a red light when the westbound vehicle hit him, police said.
