In collaboration with Spotify, Aguilera reflected on the 25th anniversary of her self-titled debut with a live rendition of some of its most famous tracks, a live band, and backup singers. The singer also reunited with Ron Fair, Senior VP of A&R at RCA Records who is credited with discovering Aguilera, to reflect on the early years of her career.
Aguilera also brought out “Espresso” singer Carpenter to sing a rendition of her second single, “What a Girl Wants.” A proud Aguilera looks on as Carpenter opens the song before taking over for the second verse. The two effortlessly trade vocal duties — all while sitting on a couch.
Spotify‘s forthcoming video project and EP with the “Genie In a Bottle” pop icon drops on Monday (September 23) in honor of the 25th anniversary of her self-titled debut album, as part of Spotify’s ongoing Spotify Anniversary video series.
The special video project was shot at Spotify’s Mateo studios in LA, and features Christina performing reimagined and unplugged renditions of some of her biggest hits, including appearances from Sabrina Carpenter and mgk.
The 25-year-old singer will be joining Aguilera as she celebrates the 25th anniversary of her eponymous debut album in a special episode of “Spotify Anniversaries.”
The episode, which will also include an appearance from MGK, is scheduled to be released on Sept. 25.
Aguilera closed out the emotional session with “Reflection,” the Mulan soundtrack song that started it all. Because of the reception the song received, it was eventually adopted as a track on her debut.
The collaboration with Carpenter will be extra meaningful for the Short ‘n Sweet pop star, who has long been an admirer of the “Genie in a Bottle” singer. “That was one of my very first idols and icons. I was 11 years old and you couldn’t get her name out of my mouth,” she told Paper last month. “She’s very special to me. Those songs raised me.”
The flashback to Christina Aguilera follows Spotify Anniversaries episodes with Isaiah Rashad, who rerecorded songs from Cilvia Demo for its tenth anniversary, and Weezer, which went back to The Blue Album for its 30th anniversary.
