The recent victory of the New York Mets over the Philadelphia Phillies, with a decisive score of 11-3, exemplifies the dynamic nature of Major League Baseball and underscores the significance of team cohesion in achieving success. This game, held on a notable date in the 2023 season, showcased not only the offensive prowess of the Mets but also their ability to capitalize on defensive errors made by their opponents. The comprehensive win reflects both strategic planning and execution by the Mets' coaching staff and players alike.
From an offensive standpoint, the Mets displayed remarkable coordination at bat. Key players contributed significantly to this triumph, with multiple home runs and consistent hitting throughout the lineup. The ability to maintain pressure on Pittsburgh's pitching staff allowed New York to build an early lead that they would not relinquish. This exhibition of batting depth is crucial for any successful team as it creates challenges for opposing pitchers who must navigate a formidable lineup
Alvarez and Nimmo homered in a three-run fifth inning off Aaron Nola (12-8), Alvarez's second three-run homer in a span of three at-bats.
“We're playing well,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.
Bader homered in the eighth against Tyler Gilbert and Pete Alonso went deep in the ninth off infielder Kody Clemens. It was the first big league homer allowed in 12 career pitching appearances by Clemens. His father, seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, gave up 363 in 24 seasons.
New York All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor had an RBI double and left in the middle of the seventh inning because of lower back soreness. Mendoza said it was precautionary and Lindor likely would've stayed in the game had the score been closer.
Schwarber missed one game with a hyperextended left elbow and will bat leadoff, while Realmuto hasn't played since Sept. 6 after fouling a ball off his left knee and suffering a knee contusion. Realmuto will hit fifth in the series opener against the Mets.
The final missing starter, third baseman Alec Bohm (left hand strain), will begin a rehab assignment along with infielder Edmundo Sosa (back spasms) Saturday at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He’ll play third, DH on Sunday and, if all goes well, be activated when the Phillies open a three-game series in Milwaukee on Monday. Sosa will play in the field both games, but isn’t eligible to come off the IL until Tuesday.
