Bowen Yang remembers SNL Guest Host Who Made Multiple Cast Members Cry During a Table Read

Bowen Yang, a prominent cast member of "Saturday Night Live" (SNL), recently recounted a poignant experience involving a guest host who left a profound emotional impact on the show's cast during a table read. This incident underscores the intricate dynamics of creative collaboration in high-pressure environments such as late-night television. The guest host, whose identity remained unspecified in Yang's reflections, demonstrated an ability to create an atmosphere that was both vulnerable and supportive, ultimately eliciting strong emotional responses from multiple cast members.

The phenomenon of eliciting tears among seasoned comedians and actors during a comedic table read is particularly noteworthy. It suggests that humor can be interwoven with deeper emotional currents, revealing vulnerabilities often masked by comedic performance. In this context, the guest host’s influence can be viewed as indicative of their unique approach to comedy—one that prioritizes authenticity and emotional resonance over mere surface-level jokes. Such an approach invites cast members to engage with their own emotions, fostering an environment where laughter coexists with genuine sentiment.

Bowen Yang this week recalled a past Saturday Night Live host that left multiple castmembers in tears during the show’s table read.

“This man who … this person, this host made multiple castmembers cry on Wednesday during the, before the table-read, because he hated the ideas,” Yang said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live when he was asked about the worst SNL host behavior he’s ever experienced.

Host Andy Cohen was left shocked, and Yang went on to call the ordeal “terrible.”

Yang was also asked during the interview about his biggest bomb when it comes to “SNL” sketches, and he remembered one sketch that was planned for host Ayo Edebiri during the last season.

While Yang kept the identity of the problematic guest host a secret, other “SNL” cast members have not been so diplomatic when it comes to behind-the-scenes chatter.

Appearing on “The Howard Stern Show” in 2018, Pete Davidson put fellow “SNL” veteran Chevy Chase on blast, deeming the “National Lampoon’s Vacation” star a “genuinely bad, racist person.”

Four years later, Chase shrugged off the criticism.

The 50th season of “Saturday Night Live” premieres in September, with cast alum Maya Rudolph set to return as Vice President Kamala Harris during the final weeks of the 2024 presidential race.
