Roughriders fall to Elks 42-31 for first win of the season

The recent matchup between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Edmonton Elks marked a significant moment in the Canadian Football League (CFL) season, culminating in a 42-31 victory for the Elks. This game not only signified the Elks' first win of the season but also highlighted ongoing issues within the Roughriders’ performance. The contest showcased contrasting trajectories for both teams, with Edmonton seizing an opportunity to gain momentum while Saskatchewan struggled to maintain consistency on both offense and defense.

Throughout the game, multiple factors contributed to Saskatchewan's defeat. The Roughriders displayed vulnerabilities in their defensive lineup, allowing Edmonton's offense to exploit gaps effectively. Quarterback Taylor Cornelius led an impressive offensive charge for the Elks, throwing for multiple touchdowns and demonstrating agility in extending plays. In contrast, Saskatchewan's defense appeared disorganized at critical moments, failing to contain key players such as receiver Kenny Lawler and running back Kevin Brown. This lack of cohesion ultimately allowed Edmonton to establish an early lead that they maintained throughout the match.

The Elks are coming off a 44-28 loss as 3-point favorites to the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats Sunday with the Over (51) cashing. They played the Roughriders in their 1st game of the season, losing 29-21 at home as 1-point underdogs June 8.

The Roughriders lead the West Division. They won 5 straight games to start the season but have lost 2 of their last 3. They’re coming off a 20-16 loss at the Montreal Alouettes July 25, failing to cover as 3.5-point underdogs as the Under (47.5) hit.

Mace knew what kind of player Leake was heading into the game, both of them being with the Toronto Argonauts in 2023. Leake was named the CFL’s most outstanding special teams player that year.

“I’d venture to say that’s the best game he’s had since being in this league,” Mace said. “Certainly in our time here, that was our worst rush defence. It didn’t look like us.”

Johnson called the performance, “embarrassing” for the defence.”

“Somewhat of a wake-up call,” Johnson said. “It’s one of those types of games where you look in the mirror and know we have to be better across the board. When you lose like that, it’s not just one player, one person, one reason, there’s multiple reasons across the board.”

Former Riders’ receiver Tevin Jones also had a big night for the Elks, catching three passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns. For Saskatchewan, five different receivers had 40-plus yard games.

After the game, Riders’ head coach Corey Mace took blame for the loss, as his team suffered its second straight defeat to fall to 5-3.
