After eight successful seasons in the NFL, former Giants and Raiders tight end Darren Waller has announced his retirement from professional football. Waller, known for his exceptional athleticism and versatility on the field, leaves behind a legacy of hard work and dedication to the game.
Throughout his career, Waller was a consistent playmaker for both the Giants and Raiders, showcasing his ability to catch passes and make big plays in crucial moments. His leadership on and off the field was recognized by teammates, coaches, and fans alike.
Waller hinted earlier this year that he would make a decision about his future in the NFL before a mandatory minicamp next week. The football star played for the New York Giants for one year after being traded to the team from the Las Vegas Raiders for a third-round pick in March 2023. Before coming to the Giants, he had spent five seasons with the Raiders. Waller was originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round at the 2015 NFL draft.
Having turned in a combined 18 receptions and two touchdowns in his first three seasons played (he missed all of 2017 due to suspension) from 2015-2018, Waller burst upon the national radar in 2019. Having been released by the Ravens during the 2018 season, he was quickly signed by the Raiders, but played in only four games.
Waller began his career with the Baltimore Ravens in 2015, playing sparingly and moved onto the Raiders in 2017. He broke out in his second season in Oakland, recording a 1,145 yards and three touchdowns followed by 1,195 yards and nine touchdowns the season after in 2020, making the Pro Bowl. Waller played two more seasons in Las Vegas before the team traded him to the Giants in March of 2023.
A native of Landover, Md., Waller tallied 350 catches for 4,214 yards and 20 touchdowns in 86 games spread out over eight NFL seasons.
Waller's football career in recent years had been affected by injuries, particularly hamstring issues, which forced him to miss a good chunk of games each of the past two campaigns.
Waller's one season in New York saw him finish with 52 catches for 552 yards and one touchdown in 12 games. He was the team's leading receiver before he hurt his right hamstring in late October that cost him five games
