The Indiana Fever secured a narrow victory over the Chicago Sky with a final score of 71-70 in a thrilling WNBA matchup. The game showcased the talent and determination of both teams as they battled it out on the court.
Indiana's defense was instrumental in their success, holding Chicago to just 70 points and forcing key turnovers at crucial moments. Their ability to disrupt Chicago's offensive rhythm was a major factor in securing the win.
In the latest matchup between college rivals Clark and Angel Reese, and on a day former South Carolina star Kamilla Cardoso made her regular-season pro debut in front of another sellout crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Clark finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists in a 71-70 victory over the Chicago Sky on Pride Day.
Indiana (2-8) snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 1-4 at home on Pride Day and in the inaugural Commissioner's Cup game. The Fever closed it out with Erica Wheeler running down the final 6.6 seconds on the clock before passing to Clark, who tossed the ball high into the air.
Center Aliyah Boston and guard Kristy Wallace both tallied 10 points in the Fever win. Boston pulled down eight rebounds, tied a career-high four blocks, added two assists and one steal. Wallace also rallied three rebounds, two assists and one steal. The Fever outscored the Sky in paint points (38-34) and distributed 19 assists as a team compared to Chicago’s 15.
Indiana held rookie forward Angel Reese to only eight points, but added a career-best 13 rebounds. Sky rookie forward Kamilla Cardoso made her WNBA debut on Saturday with 11 points and six rebounds. Chicago and Indiana tied in fast break points, 11-11.
Before the game, Fever coach Christie Sides attempted to play up the rivalry between the two Midwestern teams, but the loud pregame ovation for Clark and a smattering of boos that were quickly drowned out by cheers for Reese during pregame introductions typified the showdown.
Reese finished with eight points and 13 rebounds in her latest round against Clark while Cardoso played for the first time since injuring her right shoulder in a preseason game May 3. Cardoso had 11 points and six rebounds in 18 minutes but was called for a foul that led to Boston’s three-point play with 1:19 left, which proved the difference.
