The clash between the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders on Sunday was a thrilling encounter that left fans on the edge of their seats. The final scoreline of 27-10 in favor of the 49ers showcased their dominance throughout the game.
From the opening whistle, it was evident that the 49ers were determined to make a statement. Their offense, led by quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, displayed exceptional precision and coordination. Garoppolo's accurate passes and intelligent decision-making allowed his team to consistently move downfield, putting immense pressure on Washington's defense.
A loud cheer erupted when the Eagles lost to Arizona in stunning fashion. After Brock Purdy threw two touchdown passes to bounce back from the worst game of his NFL career and results elsewhere fell their way, the Niners clinched the top seed in the NFC and the first-round bye and home-field advantage that comes with it.
“Thank you, Cardinals,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “Back in ’19, it took us winning in Seattle on the very last play of the game to secure the 1 seed, and the fact that we were able to get it with one game left in the season is big.”
As far back as last postseason , the Niners have never underestimated the importance of the No. 1 seed. After finally wrapping it up Sunday, they happily discussed the many ways it can help.
"It means a lot," defensive end Nick Bosa said. "Whoever gets that [No. 1 seed] has a big opportunity to make it to the ultimate goal, and that's where we're trying to go."
First and foremost, their lofty perch comes with additional rest. Not only do the Niners not have to play on wild-card weekend, but they also have the option to give banged-up starters or veterans time off in their Week 18 regular-season finale at home against the Los Angeles Rams.
Although the 49ers executed a handful of explosive plays when necessary during their 27-10 win over the Commanders, there wasn't anything special to their game plan. And yet, despite the Commanders competing longer than many expected, the fact that they were able to execute and control the clock was more than enough to hand the Commanders their seventh consecutive loss -- their longest streak since 2013.
The Commanders will wrap up the season with a home matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 7. Kickoff has yet to be determined.
