The final international break of 2023 is officially history as we are back in league action all across Europe with mouthwatering performances and surprise results happening amongst the major leagues.
In England, we saw Manchester City unable to extend their lead atop the Premier League in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool and we also witnessed Kai Havertz snatch the headlines with Arsenal defeating Brentford 1-0 and become the new league leaders.
In France, we saw PSG dispose of AS Monaco with ease in a 5-2 win to continue their reign top of Ligue 1. In Spain, Barcelona failed to secure all three points in a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano, which didn't allow them to close the gap to the three teams above them in LaLiga. And finally in Germany, Harry Kane continues to make history in Bayern Munich in their 1-0 win over Cologne.
The 23-year-old tops a star-studded list of strikers, with Alan Shearer (66), Ruud van Nistelrooy (68), Fernando Torres and Mohamed Salah (72) all behind Haaland when it comes to being fastest to 50.
Last season, Haaland's first in England, he set the Premier League record for most goals in a single season with 36 as Manchester City won the league title for the third straight time.
Everywhere Haaland has gone he has been a goal-scoring machine. In his final season with Red Bull Salzburg he scored 16 times in 14 appearances. After moving to Borussia Dortmund, he scored 62 goals in 67 games over three seasons. Now with Manchester City, he not only set the Premier League mark by being the fastest to 50 goals, he also holds the Champions League record as fastest player to reach 30 goals.
Now that he's halfway to 100 goals, Haaland can look to catch Alan Shearer, who hit the mark in 124 Premier League games.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp acted as the mediator between his Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola and his forward Darwin Nunez at full-time in Saturday’s 1-1 draw between the sides.
Guardiola and Nunez were involved in a seemingly spiky exchange of words at the final whistle of the match at the Etihad, in which Liverpool rescued a point after Trent Alexander-Arnold cancelled out Erling Haaland’s first-half opener.
As Nunez and Guardiola exchanged words after the final whistle, Liverpool boss Klopp stepped in and seemingly defused the situation.
Here is what both managers had to say about the incident, and the rest of the fallout from the clash between the two sides who started the weekend as the Premier League’s leading teams.
