Taylor Swift postpones Rio concert after fan dies

Taylor Swift postponed her Saturday-night concert in Rio de Janeiro due to extreme temperatures and one day after a fan died at her first "Eras Tour" show in the city.

Swift was scheduled to do two more shows in Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's concert has been rescheduled to Monday, Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said on X.

“The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow performers, and crew has to and always will come first,” Swift wrote on Instagram Saturday.

The cause of death for Ana Clara Benevides Machado has not been announced, media reported that fans were not allowed to take water into the stadium despite soaring temperatures, and the city's mayor has demanded changes before Swift's final two shows.

Swift posted in her Instagram stories after news of the fan's death writing she has "a shattered heart," and that she feels "overwhelmed with grief," when she even tries to talk about it.

"There's very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young," the singer wrote.

Brazil’s justice minister, Flávio Dino, said on X that the ministry would implement “emergency rules” regarding access to water at shows and other public events.

Rio de Janeiro’s mayor, Eduardo Paes, said on X that the “loss of a young woman’s life … is unacceptable”.

While authorities are investigating the circumstances of the death, Paes wrote, the municipality will demand that the show’s production company provide new water distribution points and more ambulances, and that entry be advanced by one hour.

After Rio de Janeiro, Swift, one of the bestselling musicians of all time, will play three shows in São Paulo, the last this year as part of her two-year world tour.

Swift will begin the UK leg of the tour in June 2024, playing three shows in Edinburgh, three in Liverpool and one in Cardiff, before a series of London concerts at Wembley that end in August.
