The Cleveland Browns released the following statement on QB Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Monday on two injuries sustained on different plays in the first half of Sunday's 33-31 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Imaging on his left ankle revealed a high-ankle sprain. In addition, postgame, Deshaun notified our medical staff of a new discomfort in his right shoulder that he felt after a hit in the first half. An MRI of his right shoulder revealed a displaced fracture to the glenoid.
Despite performing at a high level and finishing the game, after consultation with Browns' Head Physician, James Voos, MD, and industry-leading shoulder specialist, Neal ElAttrache, MD, it has been determined that this injury will require immediate surgical repair to avoid further structural damage. Deshaun will be placed on season-ending injured reserve and a full recovery is expected for the start of the 2024 season.
Watson added that his surgery is scheduled for next week. The team said in a statement that it expected Watson to be ready for the start of the 2024 season.
"(I'm) very confident in the doctors that's going to be doing the surgery," Watson said. "Very confident in my rehab and my mindset and my determination to get back strong."
Watson's season is over. But Cleveland's season is not.
The Browns play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, CBS) in another key AFC North matchup with playoff implications on the line.
Breaking down what Watson's injury means for the Browns -- this year and beyond -- and how it could impact the entire AFC playoff picture over the second half of the season
The Browns, and their fans were still celebrating the team’s win over the Ravens, when the bad news was delivered on Wednesday.
“We are very disappointed and devastated for Deshaun Watson, especially given all that he has battled and gone through medically this season, especially in light of how well he’s played since his most recent injury,” said Berry.
In his 12-game Browns career, Watson has thrown for a modest 2,217 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine picks.
Berry said he doesn't consider the trade and the contract extension for Watson failures.
"We see him every day in terms of his performance on the field, his preparation, his physical and mental toughness," Berry said. "We really do feel great about that position for us moving forward with him."
Backup quarterback P.J. Walker has started three games this year, helping Cleveland to victories over the Indianapolis Colts and the San Francisco 49ers.
