Tyrese Haliburton had 33 points and 15 assists, and Obi Toppin chipped in 27 points as the Indiana Pacers beat the 76ers 132-126 in an NBA In-Season Tournament game on Tuesday night and snapped Philadelphia's eight-game winning streak.
The Pacers took the upper hand in the tourney's East Group A standings, improving to 2-0 in pool play. The Sixers slipped to 1-1.
Myles Turner added 17 points for the Pacers, whose bench outscored Philadelphia's 33-6.
Joel Embiid scored 39 points and De'Anthony Melton added 30 points. Tyrese Maxey was held to 27 points on 9-of-23 shooting after scoring a career-high 50 points against the Pacers on Sunday.
The Indiana Pacers halted Philly’s eight-game winning streak, following a 132-126 final on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center.
It also marked a pair of firsts in the overarching loss column for the Sixers. In addition to being their first home loss of the season, this was their first NBA Cup Tournament setback. As a result, the Sixers dropped to 8-2, 1-1 in the East Group A pool of the in-season tournament.
In two games in Philadelphia, Haliburton scored 58 points on 20 of 32 shooting including 10 of 18 from 3-point range, dished out 32 assists and posted zero turnovers. His 32 assists is the most in NBA history in a two-game stretch with zero turnovers.
"He's our guy," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's our guy. He's a great player. ... He's just an amazing player. He has an amazing vibe, and he battled our there. He battled defensively. He battled on the boards too. He's our leader on the floor. He's our leader off the floor. He understands that for us to grow as a team, opportunities in this environment to succeed are critical. He kept a really calm, smooth, steady disposition mentally the entire night. Didn't get too up or too down. That's how you gotta play. Especially in this building."
A 17-7 Sixers run led by Embiid and De’Anthony Melton in the third leveled the game for the first time since the tip-off. The Sixers snagged the advantage in the middle of the fourth, their first lead since taking a narrow one in the first period briefly. This one was down to the wire with teams each taking slim leads back and forth. In the end, the Pacers pulled away and went on to defeat the Sixers 132-126.
The Sixers are now 8-2 on the season and 1-1 in group play in the NBA In-Season Tournament. They are back to work tomorrow night hosting the Boston Celtics (on a regular court, thankfully).
