Bills fire Ken Dorsey after loss vs. Broncos

The Buffalo Bills made a big change amid a downward turn to a season trending below expectations Tuesday, firing offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey and naming quarterbacks coach Joe Brady as his interim replacement.

Coach Sean McDermott emphasized that the decision was reached due to a desire to have increased confidence and energy and to "find consistent production."

The move came hours after Buffalo's loss to the Denver Broncos on "Monday Night Football," as the Bills turned the ball over four times and had a season-high four drops. But Dorsey's firing also comes as a response for a Bills team that sits at 5-5, falling out of the playoff picture in a competitive AFC and with the hardest strength of schedule remaining, according to ESPN Analytics.

McDermott declined to go into detail when asked if his offense was too predictable, while also saying he made the decision to fire Dorsey on his own, and without any input from Allen.

“I think more than anything, it’s to make sure that we’re trying to improve our football team in every area that we can,” he said. “I think it’s important that those guys feel, hey, something’s changed, right? And there’s something new that we can be excited about.”

Very little was exciting about an offense that was misfiring all too often, and lacked the swagger of past seasons — or even during a three-game stretch in September when the Bills won three games by outscoring their opponents by a combined margin of 123-33. The run was capped by a 48-20 win over Miami.

That championship window remains in place for a highly talented, if currently flawed club awash with topflight players, ample fan support and one of the league’s top five quarterbacks when Allen is right.

But that window may be jammed exactly where it is – no matter the amount of WD-40 McDermott applies to a squad that's only advanced beyond the divisional playoff round once (2020) during his seven-season tenure − for the foreseeable future. And that could be the primary obstacle in a conference ruled by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs but with an ever-growing contingent of quality challengers joining the stuck-in-neutral Bills.
