Matthew Perry Dies at age 54

Actor Matthew Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on the hit TV show Friends, has died, according to multiple media outlets. He was 54 years old.

Perry was found dead of an apparent drowning at his Los Angeles home on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Times, celebrity outlet TMZ and other reports.

Perry was cast in Friends, the sitcom that shot him to fame, at age 24. He starred as Chandler for the sitcom's entire 10-season run, a sarcastic yet affable commitment-phobe who later found love with the Type-A Monica Geller (Courteney Cox).

"I loved Chandler, I loved the show, and I also knew: Remember this, because it's going to be the best time of your life," Perry said in an ABC News Nightline interview with Diane Sawyer last year.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told CNN a 911 call came in at 4:07 p.m. for a water rescue emergency. Humphrey said it is unclear what body of water it was.

During the heyday of “Friends,” Perry was also a sought-after leading man who dabbled in feature films but never really took off on the big screen. His romantic life was also closely watched as Perry dated such stars as Julia Roberts, Selma Blair, Lizzy Caplan and the late Jamie Tarses, the NBC executive who developed “Friends” and went on to become the first female entertainment president of a Big Three network when she joined ABC in 1996.

Shortly after 7 p.m., as multiple helicopters whirred overhead, Perry’s mother, Suzanne, and her husband, broadcaster Keith Morrison, joined the journalists and LAPD officers on the scene. Morrison declined to comment. An LAPD officer at the scene said he had no information and that he did not know when any would be forthcoming.

Peter, a neighbor of Perry’s on Bluesail Drive who declined to give his last name Saturday evening, said he only spoke to the actor once, for five minutes, and that he was “very pleasant” and a “nice guy.”

Matthew Perry  estimated last year that he had spent around $9 million trying to stay sober. He’d been to rehab 15 times, he said; he’d had 14 surgeries on his stomach due to damage wrought from his addiction to opioids and alcohol. The worst of them came when his colon burst when Perry was 49; the actor was placed in a coma for two weeks, he said, and had to use a colostomy bag for the next nine months. “The doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live,” Perry wrote in his memoir. “I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that's called a Hail Mary. No one survives that.”
